My general go-to for avis has been to crunch anything 1k or below and leave the few 2k textures uncrunched; I don't notice loading hitches at all but then again my avis usually have few materials and a single digit download size regardless of crunch.
Is this wrong and may effect others still?

elite dangerous space station?? that's amazing lmao
I would just immediately recommend @myrodev.bsky.social's talk on optimization at Furality Umbra, it goes over a lot of concepts very well.

I'll see about giving it a shot at some point, though I'm a little nervous to! I think everything I could say has been said somewhere already.
The point of this post is that optimization is more about not doing things than doing things. I'm not actually that technically skilled!
I've been considering it! Video production is something I tend to burn out on so I'm waiting till I'm sure I can finish it.
I will say, I've made things optimized since I started so I'm definitely less knowledgeable on the pitfalls and all that, I don't have my own experiences to share.
I think my own world, Where Leylines Meet, is a good example of this. I made a choice, the moment I started the world, that I would use no grab passes or depth buffer and that the effects were limited to one material, one screen effect and post-processing.
Without that, it would be half as good.
It's choosing to not use the booth base with 200,000 polygons and instead trying something different. It's changing the design of your world, making some background details into a skybox and not designing around volumetric lights in the first place.
Constraints create the most impressive work.
I think people are misunderstanding what optimization is right now.
Optimization isn't that last step you take to drag your avatar down to poor, or to make your world bearable. It's a workflow where you make choices as you create.
You don't optimize your content, you make optimized content.
In my defense(?) Leyline events average <40 people, though I've gone to around 60 at most.
But yes. That world, despite all the particles, colours and screen effects, caps out at 100 draw calls. How? No depth buffer! Simple.

Like, I never even consider joining shelter instances out of knowing I wouldn't be able to survive there.
I generally am not too interested in whatever is considered mainstream/popular as-is, but the fact I theoretically could sometime in the future makes me happy.
Hearing the good talk about about performance gated shelter tonight... man
I'll be upgrading to a not-horrible GPU at some point in the near future, with that and gating I have a feeling I might be able to, sometime, host my own events where I'm able to see everyone. I know it'll feel unreal.

raycasts, autocorrect.
should I be reading that as a very long mao or an immediately cutoff mao with insane reverb
It's everywhere I look these days. Queer furries who throw the R-word around like it's candy, who "don't get all the hate" about Chick-Fil-A and "go there all the time", who still stream the Harry Potter game or buy HP merch.
I don't know what you call yourselves, but you are no "progressives".
that is the main point of the post honey yes
Been given the option to upgrade gpu from my 1650S to a 3060, part of me will miss being so especially low-spec, feeling the lag of specific things in vr helped me optimize so well. I don't think it'll be that much better but the card has 12gb of vram over 4.
Oh, yeah, never posted about it!
My set from Leyline's Lil Disco night, some music from my city and childhood. Put some good effort into this one and, while the in-world visual performance wasn't recorded, I think it works without it too.

i used to have different coloured eyes on my vrchat avatar and at least 90% of comments about it got it wrong
very autistic thing to get mad about but i hate when memes spread misinformation about common things
for example "beautiful cat with homophobia ๐๐" has what feels like the entire internet convinced that homochromia is when someone has different coloured eyes.
it's a hot take because if you call me those things ill think you're hot
it is genuinely so depressing to know that I work with and am surrounded by people who only think of genAI as a tool with massive benefits, rather than something that deserves criticism for its overuse, its impact on the environment, and its shattering of professions across the board.
I've been feeling really, really off for the past while now. In an attempt to better understand why, I decided to write about it and see where my words carried me.
I think I get why I feel the way I do a bit better, and that others may be able to relate.
