I agree. In many ways the marketing/business gurus basically took their same schtick to enrepreneurship in the late 1990s and early 2000s, to coaching in the late 2000s and 2010s, and once the kindle boom hit, they all turned their sights on indie authors and publishing. It's the same failing story.
College situation got worked out, but my people, after the trauma of the past two semesters and the thesis debacle, I should not have to get them to fix arbitrary paperwork just because someone's snitty I have "thesis" on my transcripts with no completed thesis. It was not I who chose this route.
Healing grief may seem a long ways away. This anthology featuring #ActuallyAutistic and #neurodivergent authors explores the impact of and the ways of healing grief in our lives.

Having the warranty run out on your body is weird. Like why is the middle toe on my left foot aching with arthritis with these storms coming? That seems very specific and random, where the knee and ankle pain that have been plaguing me for months is easing a bit....
Can we please keep highlighting the fact that there are many indie authors who make under $100 who are NOT "low-quality" accounts and that D2D is making themselves the arbiter of who "real indie authors" are. Their content guidelines are also totally arbitrary as Kobo and B&N have confirmed.
Before Olivia was left for dead by her unit, she met ancient magic…

Apropos of absolutely nothing, we'd like to remind everyone that Kobo distributes to libraries via OverDrive, and it costs nothing to publish on Kobo. Come join us! #indieauthors #publishing
Three brown hens standing in a chicken run between a pellet feeder, waterer and bird feeder used for treats. A hand in the foreground is holding a brightly-coloured bucket lined with orange tissue paper containing two eggs.
8 months ago these girls were near-featherless, skinny and terrified and now they’re gorgeous bright absolute units full of confidence who lay lovely eggs. They’ve got cauliflower this morning which is maybe their third or fourth favourite snack.
Also, Starbucks isn't so rare that you can't order what sounds good one time and then come back and order the other thing that sounded good. Granted, I haven't been to a starbucks in years because the closest one is 100+ miles away and I have better things to do in the big city.
However, having incorporated my church as a 501c3 nonprofit by myself, I am now wondering if a nonprofit might not be the way to go. The paperwork for a literacy focused group would be far less rigorous than a church.... oh gods, I'm having ideas and thoughts....
I hadn't thought about author-run ebook store. Mostly because while I can do it in a heartbeat and have the tech to do so, my biggest worry has been storage costs & processing fees. But I do have a domain I've been sitting on for over a decade and all the tech/plugins/etc. Hmm...
You know what's really embarrassing about this conflict? Iran has a 90 percent literacy rate while 50 per cent of the US reads at the 6th grade level or below. Iran sent Phds to the ceasefire talks. The US sent realtors.
I am also thinking that author co-ops may be a good way to go as well. I am thinking about opening up Epona Muse Publishing to publish books for those who don't wish to deal with D2D directly. (Thinking just 10% if I don't have to do anything except pay royalties.) We are creative; we will adapt.
FYI - In D2D go to Account > Account Status it will tell you when your maintenance fee is due. For both my personal and pub co accounts it's in 2027. This may help ease anxiety a bit because there's time to figure things out. I'm also going to include language in my newsletters about buying wide.
I guess the thing we all always need to keep in mind is that pretty much every book platform or tool is, in the end, a tech company, and that every tech company is one c-suite decision or investor trend away from screwing over their end users. Tech companies will tech company, in the end.
So after two semesters of basically getting kicked around because I cannot read my committee's mind and they didn't want to deal with a thesis on my topic as it isn't regime approved, I'm getting kicked in the teeth and screwed around. It's like they're trying to shove me out of the program. //
This accts receivable person at the college was so rude. "You're getting a bill because you registered for classes."
No, I did not. Someone decided I couldn't have the word thesis on my transcript and a whole bunch of paperwork went back and forth to drop thesis and replace it w/ indie study. 1/
Your gut is right. The CEO went to Oklahoma Christian University and based on interviews very much is aligned with the regime.
Yeah, I'm in some Facebook ARC groups and I am pleased every time someone gets called out on an AI cover.
amzn.to/425OvfR It's on Smashwords too, but I'm not sure how wide it is if you buy from other sites.
It's a very old book and may be imperfect in some ways but Southern Rose by Mary Winter (set around the civil war) at least meets 1 and 3 on this list.
Sending all the good vibes!
And it's a piss poor one. Their "content guidelines" are supposed to cut out the AI slop. I have a FICTION book featuring a heroine who does animal reiki. I used reiki as a keyword and they banned it until I emailed and said it was fiction. They're failing on all levels.
My guess is they thought buying Smashwords would bring in bucks, and Mark while he was making money was also probably doing this for the love of it as well considering that he's been in publishing probably as long or longer than I have....
You know, we're already paying Bookfunnel a monthly/yearly fee for their promo stuff. There's one hell of a business opportunity here for them if they want it.... Or Story Origin. (Whom I am not paying, but could pivot to....)
Have you looked at PubShare? That's who I'm pivoting to for another project since D2D doesn't distribute to Amazon and their support was pretty snippy when I asked.
There are quite a few 1* reviews on Trustpilot that have the same story. I know my sales also went down, but I guess I assumed it was the economy and very old titles. But I also know that my huge catalog (one of the last to be migrated) was all eff'd up too, so who knows?
