We welcomed a new member to the family this weekend. Her name is Eleanor Rigby, and she is perfect.

My favorite Davey Lopes stat: he stole 47 bases in 51 attempts ... at age 40!
Great photo! There's a chance I was at the game, but regrettably I threw away all my ticket stubs.
Tired: gold
Wired: blueberries
I wrote a post about the life and baseball career of Davey Lopes, who died last week at the age of 80.
Ha! Glad I could rekindle some memories. Of course, I had to look up the game: Gooden vs Tewksbury! www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SLN/SL...
Hometown trips can be strange. The mall where I once bought R.E.M. cassette tapes, basketball shoes, and Sbarro pizza sits barren, except for a small library and handful of empty stores. Even the dedicated mall walkers have deserted this place.
The world needs more of this.
The Dodgers and Mets have gathered at the Jackie Robinson statue for Jackie Robinson Day — an annual tradition.
You'll get it but you need to watch the slide a dozen times and friends, it is worth it
1982 Game Seven
I did a talk on the 1982 Cardinals yesterday at the State Historical Society of Missouri and included this photo in my presentation. It just so happened that someone in the audience is in the photo!
Have been going to Cardinals games for 40 years and have never seen a crowd this sparse. Took this photo last night right before first pitch. C’mon people, Jose Ramirez is in town!
Jordan Walker now has as many home runs (8) as the Cardinals have wins.
The Charleston RiverDogs are staging an ultra-patriotic Semiquincentennial giveaway tomorrow:
"Arrive early as the first 250 fans will take home our limited-edition red, white, and blue pet-waste bag holders."
NASA's Artemis II mission has captured some of the most amazing photos we earthlings have ever seen.
And great mustaches.
I left a copy of my book in the Dodgers display at Burbank Airport. Confusion will ensue when someone tries to buy it.
Had a fun time talking about “Before They Wore Dodger Blue” yesterday at the LA Library. And got to hear @stevedittmore.bsky.social talk about his outstanding Jim Gilliam biography.
Last night I found the most interesting nook in Dodger Stadium.
My favorite reading bench, with views of Mt. Baker.
TOMORROW! Check out Eric Vickrey and Steve Dittmore in a joint reading of their Dodgers works Saturday, 2-3:30 p.m., at the Los Angeles Central Library! The appearance (details here: www.lapl.org/whats-on/eve...) to be moderated by author Tom Hoffarth. Available for purchase/signing.
The first time we ever spoke was in 2002 while he was managing the Brewers. He called me over during our bp in Milwaukee, I had no idea what he wanted but I knew the name Davey Lopes and I didn't hesitate. I'm not even sure he said hello lol but I remember the conversation like it was yesterday. "You ever thought about stealing 3-0?" My face cringed because I didn't comprehend and I replied "what...no!" "Why not, it's the easiest count to steal on, pitcher isn't paying you any attention because all he wants to do is throw a strike. No slide steps on 3-0." I looked at him with the oh shit your right look and said "okay!" Around the 5th inning of the game I get on 1st and what do you know, the count goes 3-0. I look to their dugout and Davey is staring at me like what are you going to do? I was looking to get permission to run after feeling like I had the world's best kept secret given to me by the opposing manager. Davey nodded so I knew there wouldn't be any retaliation and I took off. Slid in safe with no throw. I looked back to him and although he couldn't show it I felt his pride in passing that knowledge to another young brother. From that point forward Davey was my guy! You're already missed my friend Mighty Mouse
Jimmy Rollins posted this really lovely tribute to Davey Lopes on Facebook
If you're in LA, come talk ball with @stevedittmore.bsky.social and I this Saturday! #Dodgers
Weird baseball history can happen anywhere, anytime. Even at a Portland Sea Dogs game. My column:

From humble beginnings in East Providence, Rhode Island, to collegiate stardom at Washburn University, to an incredible baseball career. Member of the Dodgers' famed 1968 draft class. Team captain. All-Star. World Series champion. Respected coach and manager. RIP, Mr. Lopes.
