I doubt very much that top 1% includes billionaires. It'll be the top 1% of earners paying income tax. Billionaires aren't paying income tax. They may pay some capital gains (which is lower than income tax) but most of the money will move through offshore accounts tax free.

I'm in the UK, and over here, upper class is about bloodlines rather than money. Someone working in a bank for minimum wage is considered middle class, but someone earning a small fortune as a builder or plumber is working class. It's all rather confusing.

Middle class seems to cover quite a broad range. Basically, you can be as rich as you like, but if you're salaried and not an aristocrat then you're middle class. Equally, you can be poor as a church mouse but if you don't get your hands dirty at work you're also middle class.
