Whenever I was fortunate enough to spend time w/ Cara Da Silva, we laughed and talked food history. She was warm and generous. I read “In Memory’s Kitchen” on the bus to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 2016. It’s one of the most important books in my library. z”l

Gefilte Fish Had A Surprise Ingredient In The 1960s: Canned Tuna Gefilte fish can be made from fresh fish or frozen fillets. It's sold in jars at the supermarket. Turns out, there's one more version. It might make you laugh — or go "yuck."

It may be hard to get fresh fish for homemade gefilte fish this year. Well, the 1960s has you covered: canned tuna gefilte fish. Last year, @NPRFood interviewed me for this story & we had a laugh. Now it may be the Passover dish for the moment.

Eli Miller, a Sultan of Seltzer, Is Dead at 86 (Published 2020) He began delivering sparkling water in 1960, when hundreds of seltzer men plied the streets. He continued until 2017, when there were almost none.
