Behold the pretty colours drawing the eye to the magnificent music stored inside these sleeves! I'll be playing as many as I can squeeze in today on Soho Radio. Audio files remain elusive to the naked eye, but there will be a few of those too, ft. sizzling new tunes straight off the skillet. 12pm.
A favourite. I saw them perform it for ATP in 2011. Great find James

I’ll add this - Big Youth voicing over rhythms at The Bakery circa 2012. Al Breadwinner live mixes in all analogue style - whilst Big Youth freestyles. In the background is former Blood & Fire co-founder Bob Harding.

7" of Big Youth with Simplicity People - Screaming Target on Grape label. Released in 1973. Produced by Augustus 'Gussie' Clarke.
Happy 77th birthday to Big Youth.
On a Wednesday afternoon in 1972 Big Youth went to the Carib Theatre to see the British crime film Sitting Target. A few days later his friend saw Dirty Harry. It inspired this classic 7"...

Certainly would. He’s living a quieter life in the West Country these days. I’d love Chris Lane to publish his memoir, and fill them with Dave Hendley’s photos. A real snapshot of a golden age 🔥🫡🔈
It was golden to be (as I was then) working and living in Manchester - Blood and Fire nights in Hulme and The Roadhouse, and promos in Vinyl Exchange etc 🔥
It was advertised as a memoir by Steve with that title, hardback print etc and it vanished. Mystery.
Yeah I saw him a few times when I lived up north. He had some great tunes, and they had good guests on the Soundsystem. There was a great lost I-Roy album that never saw the light of day on B&F…
Yeah just seen it now, very much up my street. Years ago there was a listing for a reggae volume “Music Like Dirt” that was never published - I hope something comes out because I learnt so much from Steve’s sleeve notes over the years.

Have you seen this? Steve Barrow when B&F was really taking off, discussing dub ? #bloodsndfire #dub

The best year (for me) was 2017 when I popped into Manchester on a whim. I glided past the queues lining up for Piccadilly Records, and walked straight into Eastern Bloc. Picked up what I wanted, chatted to the staff and left happy.
💯 agree.
At the start it was exclusive releases to encourage those to go to the shop in person. Now it’s got so huge, it’s about the shops showing how long the queues are, which is no fun for me.
💯🔥🔥🔥
Yes - happy birthday Scientist!
Here’s his mix of Al Campbell’s “Jah Shine On Me” (1981) - The dub kicks in at 3m 41s

12" of Barry Brown - Separation on Attack label. Released in 1980. Produced by Linval Thompson. Recorded at Channel One. Mixed at King Tubby's.
Happy 66th birthday to dub maestro Scientist.
On this mighty 12" Scientist transforms the Roots Radics rhythm to create a powerful dub foundation for Barry Brown's righteous teaching between right and wrong...

Yeah, I went to his “no off switch” book talk at Hebden Trades around 2013 I think it was.
Andy Kershaw secured the first British TV interview with Bob Dylan on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1984, when he decided to buy a jar of Hedgerow jam from a local shop as a gift to him. Handing the gift over, Kershaw remarked Dylan “inspected it as a chimp would a mobile phone”
🙏 Perfect combination! 🫡
