I made this account specifically to send these messages- I hope they don't come across as an attack or an attempt a callout, but an earnest desire to engage in thoughtful critique. Thank you for your time.
I owe a lot to the hallowstreams; the way you talk about games gave me a foothold to start thinking critically about media and developing the language I use to discuss and critique. Suffice it to say, without hallowstream i would not have had the words to express my feelings on tonights episode.
And the fact that Nolan is a 26 year old man who takes a 15 year old girl out on a date- trans women cannot escape being viewed as predators.
Its the framing of desire that irks me- does Nolan /desire/ to be like Jennifer, to be pursued by a man with a comically large penetrating weapon, or is this a position he is forced into? Is Nolan transfeminine, or transfeminized? Why is that difference important?
about the way transmisogyny operates as a social force, that the mere act of running away is enough for us to start questioning the maleness of a 26 year old man. By being chased, he is transfeminized, because women are the ones who scream and run.
Any piece of horror media will end up having something to say about gender and gender roles- who is chased and who chases, who screams and who fights back- and certainly, when clock tower puts a man in the position of the pursued, it is a feminizing role. There is discussion and insight to be had
and particularly that Trans Womanhood is a sexualized, predatory thing- that the trans woman pursues or embraces sexuality (in this case , the implied sexuality of being pursued by a violent man) because it is the only way she believes can be a woman- to her, to be a woman is to be pursued by men.
I didn't catch the live stream so I couldn't bring this up in chat, but that comment came off as kind of transmisogynistic. It plays into ideas surrounding transfemininity as a cheap imitation of womanhood
@katbamkapow.bsky.social hi Kat! I've been keeping up with hallowstream this year and tonight you made a comment about the character Nolan that I found kind of disappointing- specifically framing his being chased as "wanting to be Jennifer and this is as close as he can get"
