But all of that is beside the point—attacking Jews because you are against the policies of a country that happens to share an ethnicity with my family is horribly antisemitic.
This year, as a Jew, I feel uniquely vulnerable.

There are radical settlers who murder Palestinians, and there are peaceniks who believe in a single, multi-ethnic state. There are even religious Jews who believe it’s sacrilege to form a Jewish state before the coming of the Messiah.

His internet searches also reveal what many of us have suffered from—the conflation of Israeli and Jewish.
While the vast majority of Jews support the right of the State of Israel to exist, there is a great deal of disagreement as to what this means.

It was also revealed this week that the terrorist who attacked our synagogue last month was searching the internet for gatherings of Jews and Israelis. I hope you can see how gathering lists of Jews and Jewish organizations in this context is absolutely terrifying.

The judge’s ruling was flippant and dismissive of safety concerns. The feds say this is to help fight antisemitism, but don’t you believe it. Historically, lists have been the beginning of the end for Jews.

The idea that our government could simply strip people of their citizenship scares the hell out of me.
Also this week, a federal judge ruled that the University of Pennsylvania must submit lists of Jewish faculty and staff to the federal government.

Historically, Jews have had their citizenship taken from them, often leading up to mass expulsion and murder, so this feels very personal. One of the reasons Jews came to America in the first place was because we were guaranteed citizenship and equal status.

Today the Supreme Court is hearing a case to eliminate “birthright citizenship”, the idea that if you are born in the US, you are automatically a citizen (a concept enshrined in our Constitution).

For many reasons, hate against Jews never goes away. It goes through deadlier times and quieter times, but is never absent.
We seem to have entered one of the more dangerous times for our people. A number of recent events are converging in a very disturbing way.

Tonight begins the Jewish holiday or Passover, when most of the world’s 15 million Jews—secular and religious—gather to celebrate freedom. Whether or not you believe in the literal Exodus of the ancient Israelites from Egypt, the Jewish people have certainly had more than our share of oppression.
