This is Cortez—Handroanthus ochraceus—a native tree we plant among cacao and cardamom at Kampura. It softens the sun, feeds pollinators, and returns organic matter to the soil as its leaves fall.

Behold the cacao flower; the size of a fingernail. For about a day it can be pollinated—mostly by tiny midges living in the cool, humid leaf litter of our forest floor. Healthy soil = more midges = more cacao pods.

This box turtle lives along Caqui Creek, the freshwater stream that runs through our forest-farm. Because we grow cacao, cardamom, and other crops organically and protect forest cover around the water, animals like this have a safe place to feed, hide, and thrive.
