A very astute (and upsetting!) piece that touches on four scary cultural trends: 1) The demand for spelled-out moral clarity in stories 2) A growing inability to understand different types of narratives 3) The "customer's always right" version of fandom 4) The growth of fandom as a social identity.

Ever wonder how to get rid of a mattress? Or how to find resources for a neighbor in need? Call 311.
311 is contacted 100,000 times every day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. No call is too small.
So on the anniversary of 311 (3/11), I decided to answer some of those calls myself.
Beautiful day to fill the 100,000th pothole of the year.

Promises won't close Rikers Island. Action will.

The journey to close Rikers has begun.

We’re growing universal child care in New York City, and we want to make sure it helps parents where and how the they it need most.
Parents, please take the quick survey at nyc.gov/ParentSurvey so we can incorporate your personal preferences into our current and upcoming free child care programs.
If only there was a website with all the info parents need to find child care in New York City, including a map with every licensed provider in each neighborhood…
Oh wait! Now there is: nyc.gov/childcare

Mayor Mamdani listens through headphones as a DEP employee demonstrates a leak detection tool.
Mayor Mamdani stands near an open water pipe while DEP employees explain the leak detection process.
For my last stop, a little after 1 AM, I met with the DEP Leak Detection team. They listen to the city’s pipes, block by block, to catch leaks before they become major breaks.
I spend a lot of time visiting city workers during the day — but New York never sleeps, and neither do the people who keep it running. Tonight, I met up with a few incredible teams working the night shift.
It takes a lot of tiny movements to build something as big as universal childcare. We’re up to the task.
In 100 days, we’ve taken meaningful steps every day to make child care more accessible, affordable, and equitable for New Yorkers. Here are just a few of the milestones we’ve reached so far.
No one likes unnecessary scaffolding. Thankfully, we have a plan — and John Wilson is here to help break it down.
The hungry red panda at the Prospect Park Zoo? Adorable.
The HungryPanda delivery app scamming small businesses? Not adorable. So they will be paying $580,000 back.
We'll keep pursuing companies that take advantage of New Yorkers, and we'll keep asking if we can pet a red panda just for a second.
Today Meta started removing ads from lawyers looking for clients who have been harmed by social media while they were under age 18, according to Axios.
Over the past six years American families saw their electricity costs rise 33%, faster than the increases for businesses and industries.
And this crucial cost is going up for families faster than the rate of inflation, according to a Berkeley Lab study.
