there should never be redemption for someone like Carlson.
He certainly wasn't "tormented" by the decades he spent spewing hate online (and will continue to)

I find there is a huge difference in the impact of missing a domestic vs an international flight.

Depending on your route/destination, options can get real limited, real quick.

The no-big-deal attitude definitely strikes me as somebody who largely flies domestic

the Long Telegram sets the stage for containment but as a guiding policy, although it remains a passive goal, it is overshadowed in action by Paul Nitze's NSC-68 and active preparation for war.

Trump claiming he could have won the Vietnam War "very quickly" is...just another delusional statement by a sick and dying man who's only life-metric is to keep his name in the headlines no matter the cost or damage.

yup, that's a pretty accurate summary!

we really aren't good at 'hard' conversations in this country, by which I mean enacting change that could fundamentally change how we do things.

(not just a Canada thing, i know, but we really don't like confrontation)

so, i view the Cold War as active rivalry with preparation for war while also actively working to avoid general war...the CW is built on the shoulders of the interwar period and the immediate post-war but doesn't actively look to avoid war until 1953.

1947 is often cited as the start date, except that, as you point out, it ignores all of the interwar stuff. I have seen valid argument made that the CW starts in 1917/18 with the Western Intervention in the Civil War.

I, based on how I view the definition of "Cold War" see a slightly later date

The Cold War is absolutely over at this point. My general feeling at this point however is that the 2003 invasion of Iraq marks the end date as that's when the CW-era international structures well and truly collapsed

When a historian refers to "The Cold War", everybody generally knows what they are referring to.

But I find there is little agreement on the definition, the scope or even the time period it refers to.

This has preoccupied a great deal of my time recently.

NATO is useless because it is anachronistic. At a time when every major nation is playing its own hand (as can be seen in climate conferences), when religious pride or cultural identities are being asserted or reinforced, signing up to NATO is not building for the future. What matters now is ad hoc coalitions, bilateral cooperation, and practical arrangements, not a simplistically dualistic worldview. NATO is a survivor from a bygone age. Traditional interstate wars are disappearing and being replaced by non-conventional conflicts without declarations of war or front lines. The powers of the South (Brazil, South Africa, Argentina, China, India) are freeing themselves from the intellectual and strategic hegemony of the North, yet we ignore the way the world is changing.

Hasn't aged super well.

This man and his government need MORE scrutiny.

A roto-rooter of scrutiny. Because the rot and filth go deep.

If I find out you vote Conservative, I automatically assume you are a racist.

You might not actually be one, but if you are willing to vote for them, I assume you are at least comfortable with other people's racism. And that's close enough for me to decide.

Can we safely assume this 100% means Israel talked him into a war with Iran?
