Adverse life events and psychosocial stressors in functional neurological disorder: a retrospective cohort and case–control study using a large international electronic health record database A record of adversities was at least 2·5 times more common in FND than in migraine, and about 1·5 times more common than in GAD, varying by stressor type. Psychosocial stressors were particularly comm...

Excited to share our new paper in @eclinicalmed.bsky.social:

In this retrospective cohort study, we examined 147,595 individuals with FND. We investigated the prevalence of adverse life events nd psychosocial stressors, and how these relate to FND presentations.

Functional connectivity is dominated by aperiodic, rather than oscillatory, coupling Functional connectivity (FC) has attracted significant interest in the identification of specific circuits underlying brain (dys-)function. Classical analyses to estimate FC ( i.e ., filtering electro...

What if the “oscillatory” brain networks we study aren’t truly oscillatory?

In EEG, we show that most functional connectivity patterns reflect aperiodic activity, challenging a key assumption in neuroscience.

@jduprez.bsky.social will present it at @sfn.org

I also have one methodological concern: using path-based graph metrics (characteristic path length, global efficiency) on correlation-based connectivity may be problematic, as correlation inherently represents the shortest path between nodes. So the interpretation of these measures is not clear.

Modulation of aperiodic EEG activity provides sensitive index of cognitive state changes during working memory task

Great work!
This aligns well with our recent findings (elifesciences.org/reviewed-pre...) and others' work showing that scalp EEG oscillatory activity is predominantly in alpha and beta bands, while all other activity is aperiodic.

A substantially revised version of our paper on periodic & aperiodic activity in WM tasks is now available in eLife. We demonstrate that standard baseline correction in EEG time-frequency representations can mask meaningful aperiodic dynamics during continuous WM maintenance. doi.org/10.7554/eLif...

Hi, great work! (How) did you account for non-Gaussianity in your GAMs? Also, if I understand correctly, the paper focuses more on curated datasets for normative modeling rather than direct applicability to individual-level diagnostics - is that right?

It would be interesting to add temporal ICA for comparison.

#Neuroimaging crowd, hear me out! 👀
Did you ever want to add #EyeTracking to your #fMRI study but found it too much hassle? Got existing data you’d love to add eye tracking to?

Consider trying out *MR-based eye tracking* (i.e. inferring gaze from eye voxels)!

Here is a 🧵 with a few options!👇 1/9

What grants are these?

I had zero luck with grants. People really didn’t get why what I did was important and never figured out how to explain it to them.

Update on eLife’s indexing status at Web of Science Following Web of Science’s decision to place eLife “on hold” while it reevaluates our review process, we explain what this means for authors and outline our next steps.

Web of Science, the index responsible for Journal Impact Factors, has paused indexing eLife Versions of Record as they reevaluate our model against their editorial evaluation criteria. We continue to be fully indexed in all other major scholarly indexes.

A quick note to all the NewSkys: there really isn’t algorithm here. We depend on each other to spread the word. So if you want others to see something, repost it. Liking something adds it to your feed but doesn’t surface it for others.

Wrote a brief blog post about the most egregious issues of the new Ketamine depression paper below. As so often in this lit, core conclusions do not follow from the presented evidence.

We have developed a method for time-resolved parameterization of EEG activity into aperiodic and periodic components. We show that what appears as theta in a baseline corrected time-frequency plot may actually be changes in aperiodic activity.
