MOMENTUM 2026 is a national initiative exploring new ways organizations can be structured and led.
⏭️The work centers on possibility, exploring ideas based on where they can work and allowing them to evolve over time.
I think this is a real opportunity for us to build from the ground up, to re-imagine the idea of board governance and to intersect some innovation into how a board functions across the country."

"So this is no secret to anyone, but the nonprofit board structure is not working and it likely has not worked really in a very long time. And people talk about it, they whisper about it, but the idea of having a public conversation feels very scary and it shouldn't be scary.

The mental health statistics do not lie about any of this. There are so many risk factors that affect us. Physically, as a black woman, I can speak to it. It lives in your body. It shows up in outrageous ways.
And you are still expected to show up, smile, /2
Flashback to 2024 when @Calida_Jones spoke up for mental health @SphinxOrg Connect:
"When black women and women of color, but specifically black women, speak up and they're not heard and they're not listened to, that is a problem. And it's being proven constantly and consistently. /1
the areas usually assigned to boards.
💥Ecosystem-Based Boards – Pooling board resources and expertise across multiple organizations, to focus expertise, provide better governance for small nonprofits, and reduce inefficiencies and wasted time.
There are other choices! Let’s start using them.
💥💥
staff are two partnered entities that have mutually complementing power and responsibilities.
💥People and Roles over Structure – Dissolving the arbitrary distinctions between ‘board’ and ‘staff’ to instead have a unified team of people who have clear responsibilities to one another that cover--
💥Splitting Responsibilities – Creating separate groups of people for different organizational purposes. Embracing the realities of humans instead of trying to find board ‘unicorns’.
💥Power Balancing – Shifting the top-down power model with the board over the staff into one where the board and
These models include:
💥Redefining Individual Qualifications – Establishing much more specific expertise, obligations & training requirements for board service.
💥Reframing within Familiar – Keeping a familiar board structure but redefining membership, expectations, compensation, or accountability.
Over the past several years, we’ve been studying and developing alternative board models—approaches that still meet all legal requirements but operate in fundamentally different ways. We’ve identified several alternative core approaches, with many variations, that could be implemented today.
Across the country, staff, board members, and funders repeatedly tell us the same thing: the traditional board model isn’t working for many organizations. (If it works great for you, that's fantastic! This is for everyone else.)
💥We don't have to be stuck with something that doesn't work for so many. If you've ever wondered whether boards can work better, or in a whole different way, the answer is an emphatic yes!
A living strategy aligns its rhythm with: info gathering, ecosystem updates, financial/asset tracking, and community responsiveness. It evolves daily, not just at an annual meeting.

Strategic Pathways succeed by establishing a rhythm: maintaining a core group (board, execs, staff) to not just set direction, but to watch and course-correct as choices play out. This builds institutional memory and wisdom.
Strategy isn't a static document; it's a living, breathing part of organizational life. Cultivate it as an ongoing engagement that embraces rhythm, responsiveness, and evolution. #StrategicPathways #CreativeThinking #WeHaveMoreChoicesThanWeThinkWeDo
