A network of 20 inauthentic YouTube accounts has racked up nearly 40 million views by peddling lies, grievance, division and narratives normalizing the prospect of Alberta’s secession and annexation by the United States. @charlesrusnell.bsky.social reports. #abpoli

some data on the shrinkage
Exactly the convo we're having in our dept about our curriculum. Student do a lot of independent studies, but lots of labs are computational. To help in those labs, some technical skills are needed.
As we read this about the Roberts Court let’s remember the shadow docket grievously harmed American scientific research, cancer cures, and public health over the past year.
For ex, KBJ’s “Calvinball” quote was in an NIH case. More, short 🧵 1/
Open-mindedness was the strongest predictor of *rejecting* conspiracy theories in a sample of 46,745 participants in 68 nations
In particular, participants who were threatened by people who disagree with them were the most likely to believe conspiracy theories.

The UCP govt is rejecting the electoral map proposed 3 weeks ago.
A govt motion that could come as soon as this morning outlines the new process which will be overseen by a UCP-led committee, will not allow for public input, and grow the number of MLAs from 87 to 91

From the DM’s…
The UCP are so committed to removing bias from the education curriculum…
They’ve introduced legislation to ensure pro-industry bias is introduced into the education curriculum.
Complete with a text campaign.

5 popular AI chatbots gave problematic response to nearly 50% of the questions asked about misinformation prone fields like vaccines, rarely providing disclaimers or refusing to answer.
Grok was the worst, the only one partially trained on X content. I guess no shocker there.
This is figure 1, which shows Long COVID Disease Burden vs. Other Conditions, by Sex Predominance.
A study in Communications Medicine finds that Long COVID’s disability burden rivals that of Alzheimer’s and asthma in the US, but Long COVID receives 14% of its years lived with disability-proportionate funding from the National Institutes of Health. go.nature.com/4v23Nzv #medsky 🧪
NEW—I got an exclusive excerpt from a USAID whistleblower's new book that made me gasp multiple times. It details Trump's dismantling of the humanitarian aid agency & his team/DOGE's shocking ignorance to public health.
'Into the Wood Chipper' by Nicholas Enrich is out tomorrow. Read excerpt here:
The last time I tried to engage with Jay Bhattacharya in dialogue I ended up on administrative leave. 🤷♀️
I found a recipe for fatboy chili online, and let me tell you, it also makes a mean Cincinnati spaghetti (which also has Greek immigrant origins!)
How dare the thing I'm trying to do be the solution to my impasse. 😪
Bhattacharya is not a friend to science. The sooner the scientific community (and members of Congress!) realize this, the better shot we have to save science.
This article positions Bhattacharya as a defender of science, pushing back against Russell Vought’s OMB.

Jay Bhattacharya, Matt Memoli and others in this admin have weaponized the term “DEI” in incoherent ways that deeply and fundamentally harm science.
Was honored to work on this with Jennifer Troyer & Alice Popejoy. open.substack.com/pub/sciencea...
I have a dear friend who is trans, and from Idaho. This is why I have very little time for academics who are apologists for transphobia. And that includes a heck of a lot of philosophers who I used to respect.
And in horrifying news, Idaho's governor has signed the felony bathroom ban, with 5 year penalties for second offense bathroom usage, into law.
This is the most significant criminalization of trans people to date.
On trans day of visibility no less.
It will require a new "Do not travel" warning.
This 50 yr old woman spent 5 months in jail accused of a crime in a state she's never even been to, because Clearview AI misidentified her as the suspect.
A judge signed off on it, cops went along with it, no process in place to even question the AI.

Wow, this is frightening: 95,000 scientists and researchers, gone. Brilliant minds no longer working to protect, help, and save people and the planet.
Don't take this sitting down.
A politician with the guts to say it:
"No American child from the blue collar or the middle class should have to die fighting in Iran. Let the Epstein class fight the Epstein War."

A new paper in Science measured the prevalence of social sycophancy across 11 leading large language models. The model’s responses were nearly 50% more sycophantic than humans’, even when users engaged in unethical, illegal, or harmful behaviors.

NEW: The NIH has been policing language in research proposals to weed out “DEI”—a term seemingly loosely defined to mean anything relating specifically to minority groups.
I spoke with an early-career researcher who says his work is being censored.

The pandemic made me realize ableism is a form of discrimination that enjoys such widespread, bipartisan support, one cannot even see its edges.

HHS used to be one of the highest ranked departments by its employees. Now it’s near the bottom. The points raised in this article hold true. Feds are not okay. And it’s really hard to convey WHY to those outside.
And it’s well-known now too that research on-campus at NIH is being slowly choked to death.
Scientists are leaving and not being replaced, lecture visits blocked, people are spending more and more time not on science but on fruitless paperwork seemingly created to stop progress.
Oh I masked it a lot. 😅 I guess we didn't talk about hockey enough.
Excluding Canadians, I assume. Dialects cross the border. Eg I could easily be an extra in Fargo.
