They are removed from the land and can no longer grow their own food. They are imprisoned if they resort to stealing, begging, or prostitution. Their only option is to exchange their labor power for a wage. The logic of capital is inserted into the newly formed gap between humans and their survival.

Class divisions have historically been maintained by two forms of power: violence and ideology. Capitalism introduces a third type: economic power. It does this by first using violence to separate people from their ability to meet their needs outside of the market.

i find this notion that public spending is illegitimate bizarre as a matter of economics but totally legible as a statement of moral economy. and as per any strict system of morality, the punishment is part of the appeal. they are punishing the american people for believing in the public good.
