A picture of a rather dilapidated copy of "The picture of Dorian Gray" There is visible water damage to the cover and the plastic cover is yellowing. Obviously, not evident from the picture but there is a truly foul musty smell emanating from it!

Last week, a gentleman returned this rather dilapidated copy of this famous book to us after 50 years. He had found it in his attic!
Presumably this means there is a pristine copy somewhere in our libraries....

I wish Iain Banks was still around, mainly because he was a great writer and a fantastic all-round person but in part because I would have *loved* to hear his take-down of Musk.

People over on Facebook/YouTube/elsewhere on bluesky/reality have been mocking this, but these are all totally genuine and highly advanced GMing techniques pioneered in obscure corners of indie rpg design in the early 2000s.

Let's go through them one by one and learn together.

• JD VANCE RESPONDS TO POPE LEO:
"When the Pope says that God is never on the side of those who wield the sword - there is more than a THOUSAND year tradition of Just war Theory."

"In the same way that it's important for the vice president of the United States to be careful when I talk about matters of public policy, I think it's very, very important for the pope to be careful when he talks about matters of theology."

"And I think that one of these issues here is that there has been - if you're going to opine on matters of theology, you've got to be careful, you've got to make sure it's anchored in the truth, and that's one of the things that I try to do, and it's certainly something I would expect from the clergy, whether they're Catholic or Protestant."

I’ve given this a great deal of thought, trying to come up with the perfect joke for this moment, and this is what I have so far -

POPE LEO: our religion teaches that this war is bad

VANCE: wow, who died and made YOU head of the Catholic Church??

POPE LEO: well, you should know, you were there

It's not even advanced computer science. This is how fault-finding was taught to me in the RAF: check half-way through the faulty system, and if the fault is present check further back, and so on.

Very sorry to hear that the great Ian Watson left us today. I last saw him at Eastercon a year ago, where he bought me a magic wand to go with my elf ears. He will be much missed.

Why about all the other people who were involved in performing, recording and producing that track? Were they all mentally ill too?

You know if I had sentenced someone to death for having the power to induce spectacular flatulence I would chose a method of execution THAT DID NOT INVOLVE FIRE.

A good sergeant was invaluable for this. The best sergeants had been exactly such an individual themselves.

Any current or former military officer will confirm that someone like this in your junior ranks is worth their weight in gold, even if it means keeping a delicate balance between maintaining plausible deniability about their antics while staying well informed enough to keep them out of jail.
