I'm including snapshots of my parents from our July 1977 Israel trip, the focus of my piece. Tonight begins Yom HaShoah, the day on which we remember the tragedy that made me who I am.

2/3 (present-day Lviv, Ukraine). I spotted the number on his arm, which was so close to my father's number that they may have arrived at Auschwitz on the same day in November 1943. He told us he was a non-Jewish Pole who had been arrested by the Nazis as a political prisoner because of resistance >>
