So millennials who turned to, say, Facebook to keep up with their school friends now find that the stream of dinner party photos and kids’ birthdays are all AI engagement slop. The only people you see on the feed are the ones that either generate the slop or comment on it.

Malaysia’s Karex, which makes about a fifth of the world’s condoms, is raising the prices of prophylactics, lubricant jelly and catheters by up to 30% due to the effects of the Middle East war ft.trib.al/LycgbHM
Update on the Moda Center process: I was recently asked to join a small group of councilors to stay close to the talks as the admin enters negotiation. It was conveyed to me that a condition of being in this group would be a commitment to honor an NDA between the city and the team. I refused. 🧵

a thing i've been thinking about (as part of reading this very good book) is how some of what looks to us like a delayed response or inaction to the kind of stratospheric wealth accumulation our tech executives have managed is that this is basically an entirely new problem in human history
John Kruk in the booth just said he hadn't ever watched Saturday Night Live.
Jason Benetti asked "weren't you in a skit at some point?"
Kruk said he didn't think so. Not as far as he knew.
Imagine Chris Farley played you in an SNL skit and you never even knew it!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kC9...
"Does that device need to be online? Do we need to be connected in this context? Does this process have to happen on this platform?...The cost/benefit analysis for many actions and routines is likely to shift, maybe just for a while, or maybe for a long time to come."

My TV asking me if I would like the place a bet is a good sign that we are losing control of our senses in this country.
when robots take over, they're not going to run like a toddler with a full diaper, they're going to be the size of grains of salt and crawl up our noses to access our neural network, this is all misdirection
Incredible sequel. Edge of my seat!
“Take a moment to think before you dive in. That’s the best advice for Google Photos users, as the company confirms its latest update can scan all your photos to “use actual images of you and your loved ones” in AI image generation.”

I was going to argue that they should bring in what high-end partners do, and then need to retire for the book deal, junkets, and speaker fees. But the argument for that is competition and quality, and looking around, it might be that a lower salary gets us the better candidates.
i will give the press corpse this — going to the trouble of printing a couple of lines of the first amendment out on a sheet of fabric to express your fears about encroachment, then folding it up and putting it away in your suit pocket *does* send a message. it’s just not the message they think.
Re: nostalgia for VHS tapes and other analog media, I saw someone say like "a VHS tape never sold my information to a nazi" and yes that's true! But the reason it's true is actually because Congress passed a law in 1988 specifically making it illegal for video stores to sell your rental history

A permanent stain in Oregon history will be that the city of Grants Pass took its desire to punish homeless people all the way to the Supreme Court. The small town was used by cities and states in the West to set the precedent that homeless people can be punished for being homeless—anywhere, anyhow.
The report about the surveillance at Madison Square Garden and other James Dolan properties is insane and towards the bottom, there’s a reveal that this kind of surveillance will also be used against fans during the World Cup

Democrats planning to run in November’s midterm elections have been advised not to antagonise pro-AI campaign groups that have amassed more than $300mn to fight for the industry’s priorities. The warnings by top party consultants, corroborated by people close to four different campaigns and party strategists speaking on the condition of anonymity, come despite internal polling for Democrats showing widespread public support for tougher AI rules.
They're calling it the best democracy ever.

You can find meanness in the least of creatures, but when God made man the devil was at his elbow. A creature that can do anything. Make a machine. And a machine to make the machine. And evil that can run itself a thousand years, no need to tend it.
The federal government – ICE, FBI, and more – is spying on you without a warrant.
This week, Congress will decide whether Kash Patel, Stephen Miller and Trump can keep spying on Americans. If that scares you (it should) this thread is for you.
That is really unprofessional.
Well, librarians slowly are. Funding gets tighter and tighter.

Please, thank you, yes ma’am, no sir, hold the door for people, say excuse me, eat what you’re served, give a thank you wave when someone yields, tip 20%, go to the same spot to eat regularly, talk to your neighbors, cut the the kids some slack, it’s Sunday league not USL, say cheers, buy a round.
I work in a school, and a kid just today was surprised to find out I don’t have kids. I said, “I just like other people’s children.”
