A beautiful, breath-taking, even stunning photo of Sullivan's Island in South Carolina in April of 2026, where the cloudscape is in hues of purple & orange while the sunsets in the distance. Sea oats, sand dunes & a Sabal Palmetto Tree surround the shore in the forefront. The image is enhanced but NOT artificial. It's accompanied by a quote by the late Christopher Hitchens about nature & the natural world. 📸 John Rector of S. Carolina.
This is Sullivan's Island in South Carolina on 4/17/26.
"I think there's no supernatural dimension, the natural world is quite wonderful enough..."

A split bar chart of YouGov polling data with the headline: "Americans are most likely to say T. Rex is their favorite dinosaur, but many don't have a favorite." The chart has the sub-headline: "Which of the following is your favorite dinosaur? (%)." The chart has the note: "Note: "Other" includes responses of archaeopteryx, spinosaurus, plesiosaur, ankylosaurus, allosaurus, parasaurolophus, dilophosaurus, diplodocus, iguanadon, and pachycephalosaurus, as well as responses of "other." We know pterodactyls and plesiosaurs aren't dinosaurs. Opinion about dinosaurs comes from the question, "How much do you like or dislike dinosaurs?""
A shocking new poll result: Many Americans somehow don't have a favorite dinosaur.
And only 6% give the correct answer (triceratops).

A flag hanging from a house in my neighborhood. A white horizontal flag pole holding a white flag with green border and a smaller yellow border inside it. in the center of the flag is a green circle with a picture of a US map colored in in yellow. Above the map is the word "Masters" and a golf hole with a red flag above it denoting Augusta, Ga on the map.

I pass a house on my morning walk that for years has flown a flag with a picture of Trump and Abe Lincoln. Today it was replaced by this. Don't know what to make of it but I'll monitor the situation. Note: There is no known link between Lincoln and Epstein...
"Good news,” read a banner outside the main ballroom, erected by the CO2 Coalition, a climate-denying non-profit that co-sponsored the conference. “There is no climate crisis.”

Overlook from Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Mountain ridges turning from greenish to gray with distance slow a blue sky with some white clouds
Section of the Appalachian Trail from Newfound Gap. Brown soil with occasional rail steps and some small blue flowers on the left side of the trail.
Did a really short hike on the Appalachian trail from Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I really miss my hiking partner. It got kind of overwhelming.
No, it actually kind of snuck up on me. I was sight seeing and all of a sudden it was walking down the sidewalk right at me. Luckily it turned into the parking lot while I stood frozen. You can’t tell from the photo but she’s huge!
Large elk walking in a parking lot in Maggie Valley, NC. The elk is tan-brown in color and walking between two parking spaces in front of a light yellow one story building with two white columns in front of a window and a large green bush on the left.
Things I don’t usually see on my morning walk.

A really cool little town.
A two story red brick building with two large windows on the second floor reflecting clouds and part of the mountain and trees in front of it against a blue sky. On the first floor is a white door with the number 232 on it on the right and a sign in a large window announcing Willow Hill coming summer 2026.
So that’s where all the data goes…

A large banner (maybe 5’ by 7’) hung from pvc piping in front of the Haywood County Courthouse. The banner says No Kings In America in white letters on a blue background with a picture of the Statue of Liberty on top and various slogans on a white background on the bottom. The courthouse is a large three story slate building.

I happened upon a No Kings protest on Main Street Waynesville, NC. They provided signs, so I had to join in.

Front of the Friends of the Library used book store in Sylva, NC. In the foreground is a rolling rack of books with two levels. A side angle of the yellow brick front of the Balsam Falls Brewing Company. With a green sign with the brewery name over the door and a flag sign in front with the brewery name and a picture of an evergreen tree. In front of the brewery is a black light pole and in the foreground left is a red awning.
I went to Sylva, NC to look for some books. Strangely only one of these places had any.
Years ago we did a ride on the parkway from here to Brevard. It took around 7 hours because we couldn’t pass up an overlook or short hike. Every view different and beautiful.
Yeah, it happened during a “deep dive” which were always a little unnerving. The sub would creek from the pressure. What good came out of it was the implementation of the Sub Safe system.
Cover of the book The Death Of The USS Thresher by Norman Polmar. A front view of the submarine riding on the surface of the ocean with crew members visible on top of the sail. The photo is in black and white with the title in red on top and the author’s name in white on the bottom. Under the title in smaller black letters is the caption “The story Behind History’s Deadliest Submarine Disaster.”
On this day in 1963 the USS Thresher sank with all hands, becoming the first Nuclear Submarine lost at sea. I picked up this book a while ago but finally got around to reading it. Nothing enlightening about the cause, but interesting how the Navy did search and rescue - then recovery ops.
I know I’m late and nobody will see this but thanks for reminding me of this song. One of my favorites. youtu.be/D10_uNfCW4Y?...
