My solve for this was using a Logitech X52. It's not the perfect HOTAS, but good enough and relatively cheap to not feel like I was knocking it over.

When I was big into playing it on VR during the pandemic, I was just using a gen one Oculus Quest and it was great for what it was

I've told people that I might have gotten into game dev because I like dev, but the reason I've stayed is for the rad people.
