Wildstar came out late into one of WoW's longest content lulls at the time, and their response was just to slightly boost the drop rates of particular quest items and remind players they only had two months left before it was GOOONE FOREVERRR.

And it worked. And Blizzard took note of that.

I get that at their core, most MMOs have to provide *some* reason for you to keep coming back. But having played WoW since Vanilla, if you were paying attention there was clearly psychology studies going on to see the bare minimum they had to do to keep people on the treadmill.

I could go on for hours about all the systems that cropped up over the years that were clearly just there to try to squeeze as much blood from the stone as they could.

That... is cool as hell.

Two expansions later, gold farming was drastically nerfed AND they introduced a dozen insanely expensive items. I did the math at that point and realized that you'd actually be *better off* taking a minimum wage job and using the money from that to buy gold rather than playing the game at all.

This was one of the big ones for me. In Warlords of Draenor, WoW introduced their system that let you buy game time for in-game currency, and I immediately noticed friends who were logging in SOLELY to grind gold to earn enough to buy a month of game time to grind gold to earn enough to buy a month-
