An important reminder.
I think Google Scholar includes self-citations, so their h-indices should only be used very cautiously.
(if I'm wrong about that, I'm sure people will tell me!)
Compare your Scopus vs Google h-index, if you're curious. Night and day, often.

Lyric for the day:
"I've been thinking too much, I'd better go home"
--- The Trews
My God, we've told students for decades/centuries about the importance of finding your own voice (by writing). Was that all a lie?
And now we're throwing it all out the window bc Tech Bros want the world that way, we're drawn to their shiny objects like magpies.
I realize some will reply/think:
"We don't need writing skills in this new AI world".
Maybe.
But writing is for (high-level) thinking, and I personally value thinking, communicating, and writing in my own voice. And would to convince others to value it too. Academics of all people!

Was going to say:
"Students, if you don't work out your brain [using AI], you won't improve."
But same goes for *academics* !!
If you use AI to write your publications, you absolutely will NOT develop stronger writing skills.
And aren't those the superpowers you'd always wanted?
Also! I cannot figure out how this trend is compatible with democracy. How can citizens be engaged, informed, and participatory if they are unable or unwilling to critically and thoughtfully engage with new ideas/info?
Which, BTW, is why I consider AI to be antithetical to the needs of democracy.
Come join the 2027 SPSP Misinformation & Belief Science Preconference Committee! You would serve for 3 years: 1 as Future Co-Chair, 1 as Co-Chair (Cameron Kay and Sze Yuh Nina Wang), and 1 as Past Co-Chair (me & @jgranadossamayoa.bsky.social). If you are interested, apply by 05/01/2026! Link below!
I think students now think it's unreasonable to ask them to apply concepts.
Or they struggle with what "apply concepts" means?
It can be surprisingly easy to be inclusive, build bridges

Agreed.
But we could resist this urge.
I also think there's some pluralistic ignorance going on. Maybe we can use this platform to undo it!

Apparently, bc of grade inflation, students are extra scared to fail.
Huh?
Well, to fail when it's hard to fail is terrifying. HOW BAD AM I?
In other news....Imagine what it's like to fear getting fired for incompetency in a political cabinet full of grossly incompetent people.

Academics, en masse, are adopting AI.
But individually, most academics I talk to hate AI and what it's doing to education.
What gives?

My collaborator Rose Meleady is advertising a postdoc position
Requires expertise in intergroup contact/ESM studies
vacancies.uea.ac.uk/vacancies/21...
Rose is excellent -- high competence, high warmth. You'd won't find a better advisor!
Go for it.
When I was starting out, I held myself back from a position I felt under-qualified for.
Someone equally unqualified got it.
Lesson learned.
Best wishes for the application.

As an academic, I can sometimes feel bad taking a book out of library (vs buying it).
I think I need help.
From her article:
"But vaccines are not impenetrable shields. They are probability adjusters."
Love that
I'm forever talking to non-scientists about probabilities
Our data show that people are not naturally good at thinking about probabilities. IMO this is where we should target interventions

A thoughtful explanation of how (and how not) to reason with an anti-vaxxer by @unbiasedscipod.bsky.social
I find her empathy touching. But I also like how she doesn't let her sympathy for someone's negative experience override what we know from population-based science.

This looks like an important paper.
I've had convos with conspiracy theorists who claim that they are simply more open-minded than me (for instance, on where they source their "news").
Which feels an unfair argument. I'm to be impressed bc you're "open" to low-quality information?
Presumably your experiences as an academic have prepared you for this.
✴️ No, we won't fund your research. But here, why don't you evaluate this other grant for us? Be a sport.

Yeah, but they do graciously give you 24 hours.
You know, after you waited months and months on them.
What a missed opportunity to curb behaviour.
Get people driving less. Idling less. Buying smaller vehicles. Carpooling. Taking public transit.
Instead I'd support lower taxes for shipping companies & breaks for low-income people.
Government can shape behaviour for the better! Let's start!
leave yourself a reminder note for next year!
