Good point, my young man got turned down for a volunteering opportunity due to lack of funding for BSL support. Often volunteering is the only way to get valuable experience and learn transferable skills in order to get that first job.

I wonder if anyone’s made the case in the UK re providing funding for deaf/disabled people to have full access and hence experience of volunteering opportunities? Access to Work is only for work as far as I know. And for many, volunteering leads to work opportunities.

It looks like the avatar and the BSL toggle have been removed since I posted. This is what it looked like. The avatar looks human and is based on real footage but what you’re seeing is a synthetic signer - with sign language generated by AI using a database of recorded signs.

Two dancers perform on stage against a dark background. One dancer, with a strong and steady stance, lifts the other off the ground. The dancer standing on the ground gazes into the distance with a focused expression. A yellow curtain hangs in the background, adding a warm contrast to the dark stage.

A dancer with a relaxed posture sits on a black box on stage, against a beam of light shining from behind. Their head is slightly raised, and their arms rest loosely on their legs, suggesting a moment of quiet reflection or rest. The stage has low light, with the bright beam creating a dramatic contrast.

Today at the Houses of Parliament, we’re inviting MPs to learn about BSL & Deaf culture. Later, for the first time, Parliament will debate BSL as a language, not just access to services. A major moment for BSL during #SLW2025. We look forward to real progress.
