Just learned I spooked the American Cochlear Implant Alliance so much with my Lancet commentary they called it out in their January newsletter. I can receive no higher compliment so you can find the Lancet paper here: www.thelancet.com/journals/lan... 1/2

Today is Disabled Day of Mourning, to honor disabled people killed by caregivers. Fellow journalists, when we write about these situations, we need to clearly call it murder, and not through a"poor caregiver" lens.
Today is Disability Day of Mourning, when our community remembers disabled people lost to filicide. Our virtual vigil is starting now. Join us here:
This evening's class seemed to go pretty well - I always enjoy visiting! 🎢⚖️
Maybe all this winter weather has you thinking of spring and summer, BUT DID YOU KNOW, to 5-year-olds, a slide can be A MENACE

A rocket is what it should all be put on, including all of the seeds and residual genetic material, before being blasted into space never to contaminate my salads or flatbreads again.
We hold the Day of Mourning vigils to draw attention to these injustices, to commemorate the lives of victims, and demand justice and equal protection under the law for all people with disabilities. Join ASAN for a virtual vigil this March 1st: https://www.facebook.com/events/1155185306166317
Another beautiful ParkLore post. Recommended reading for students of the medium 🎢🏰🎡

A person safely using a snow blower to move some snow. The snow blower has the face and body of a Great White shark. The text reads: Hands off! Never use your hands to unclog wet snow from a snow blower. Turn your snow blower off and use a cleanout tool or a long stick.

The cover of our debut album We're Safety Now Haven't We. There are 4 of our main CPSC social media characters - Copernicus Jackson holding a cell phone with fireworks on it, Handsome Ron a european robin wearing a hat riding a smoke alarm, Potato the dog standing on top of an ATV with a helmet on his butt, and Quinn the Safety Fox wearing a bike helmet. There are lasers and fireworks going off. A warning label reads warning, this is a government public service announcement about consumer product safety.
Due to foreseen circumstances, we will not be performing at the Grammys tonight.

A forest full of space heaters sitting in the trees. There is an ice arena. Two groundhogs - one fighting for spring and one fighting for winter - shoot fireballs and icicles at each other. The fire groundhog shouts, "Parry this, vermin ice wizard!!!" The ice groundhog shouts, "For winter!!!" The text reads: As the champions rage use your space heater safely. Whatever their fate, the space heaters know they must be plugged into a wall, never a power strip; kept at least 3ft away from anything flammable, and turned off before their owner goes to bed.
This is Groundhog Day
A space heater facing off against a stuffed bear. They are much too close to one another. Hovering over them is a vast fire entity with the face of a dragon waiting for a fire to spark. The text reads: meow mow mow meow mowmow. mow mow meowmow mow 1 meter. hiss. mow mow, mow, meow, meow, mow, meow. mow meow.
Here is the version for your cat.
A young child and their mom sitting on a windowsill smiling. A cloaked figure passes by the window. Their face is only a skull. It is death. The text reads: Carbon monoxide kills in winter. Make sure you have a working CO alarm on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas.
Carbon monoxide deaths spike in winter. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms. Make sure the vents for your home heating appliances are clear of ice and snow.

Now would be an excellent time for Canada to greatly increase funding for scientific research and public health. Just saying.
With attacks on NIH, I'm thinking about the fact it took until 2023 for the department to add people with disabilities to health disparity research, which @bonnieswenor.bsky.social pushed hard for. Some equity pushes are quite new, and attacks on DEI put them in danger. hub.jhu.edu/2023/10/02/n...
So, Charlie Kirk and other anti-DEI people are attacking ASL interpreters who are providing vital information to Deaf people during the Los Angeles wildfires. New from me at @motherjones.com www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
More than 60 German-speaking universities and research institutes have just jointly announced they will cease activities on X because “the current orientation of the platform is not compatible with their core values” incl. scientific integrity, transparency and democratic discourse” 🧪

Two photos of Anna, a young white woman using an electric wheelchair, wearing a blue lab coat that fits her well with tables and dry-lab equipment in the background. Text reads: "A team of researchers and designers led by UCL is looking for wheelchair users working in wet lab environments to user-test what is believed to be the first-ever prototype of a lab coat adapted for wheelchair users."
Do you know a UK-based wheelchair user who works in a lab and would be willing to user-test our prototype of what is believed to be the first-ever lab coat adapted for wheelchair users?

Big strong man carries a yoke on which two small people sit. Excerpt from 1940s Nazi school textbook. Text caption comments that propaganda shows "the alleged financial burden of "hereditarily sick" people on the people's community. The Nazis saw "bad genes" as responsible for disability, alcoholism, criminality and asocial behaviour."
Nazi propaganda exhibited in the Topography of Terror in Berlin:

If my knowledge is so valued for their learning, the prof/teacher could ask me to do a guest lecture. I can put that on my CV. I can't allocate time to answering emails from other people's students and still produce competitive work output. Or allow students to use my FAQ instead of email interview.
These "breakthroughs" always seem to be one-way. This describes computer vision reading signs to output as spoken/written language (good luck with that; even certified interpreters have misunderstood signs, even in courtrooms). But communication isn't one-way. What about spoken to signed language?
I think it is payback for people that complained about portmanteaux.
