I felt compelled to Remember Some Guys™, thanks to @defector.com and @baseball-reference.com. Behold, a grid of 2000-2006-era Phillies pitching excellence (with one bonus name that may not seem like a pitcher, but ifykyk).

I was not ready for this advertising juxtaposition:

Thirty years ago, you'd hear a good song on the radio, buy the CD, and realize it was the only good song on the album.

Today, you hear 20 seconds of a good song on Tiktok, stream it on Spotify, and realize those were the only good 20 seconds of the song.

Is there any feeling more humbling than when you spell a word so badly spellcheck can't even find what it is you're trying to write?

Actual pro tip: the best way to break into any creative profession is by helping to support and advance other creators. Your peers are not your adversaries. They are your support group.

I deeply enjoyed binging @luxradium.bsky.social 's Metropolis podcast over the weekend. I don't know how I'll survive until January without Nan, Freddie and Alsace in my ears. If you've got any long commutes ahead of you, I suggest giving the show a listen.

My Spotify Wrapped is dominated by songs I listened to on endless repeat while writing the end of Metropolis. That includes:

* The Disco Elysium soundtrack by Sea Power
* Olafur Arnalds
* Khruangbin

Here's a question to the other creators out there: what music is on *your* endless repeat?

Extremely important PSA: apparently, all *20* seasons of the original Law & Order are going to be streaming on Hulu as of December 16th. Doctors recommend taking a fifteen minute break per eight hours of Jerry Orbach exposure.

Metropolis Episode 5 is coming out THIS THURSDAY!

If you're familiar with the concept of frisson - there are little moments of frisson I get when a moment of the show comes together well during editing. There have been a *lot* of moments of frisson in making Episode 5. Can't wait to share it. :)

If you're feeling tired, you can craft a Field Snack from an acorn, a maple seed, and a pine cone. Good energy boost early in the game from freely available materials around your farm.

Call it Stockholm Syndrome, but I've really come to appreciate Pro Tools. Anything I've wanted to do has been possible in Pro Tools, and if I end up needing to do it a lot, there's always a keyboard shortcut to make it quick.

It ain't always the prettiest, but it's a... professional tool.

If you aren't familiar with the term "semantic satiation", you will certainly *get* familiar with it once you start editing an audio drama. Right around the sixteenth time you listen to the same three second clip and what *were* words you wrote now sound like a jumble of random blurry nonsense.

Here's when you know you've been audio editing too much: you can start to recognize plosives *on sight*.

Been in the studio for Metropolis (luxradium.org). Now I *know* it's going to be good.

There are some incredible actors here in Seattle.

Howard Hawks said a good movie is "three good scenes, no bad ones". It's worth thinking about what a bad scene actually is. Scenes have huge opportunity cost - audiences get bored, they drift away. Every scene must offer something. Chinatown does this as well as anything I've ever seen.

1 year ago 0 0 0 0

The truth is - this movie is so good this little impromptu live blog is just going to become tiresome. Every scene works.

But yet! We know that he's not ahead of us in his investigation. He keeps looking for women and getting water. His alarm works, because we know he's good (one delightful detail is that he's so good he's become bored by it), and he knows the script, but this keeps refusing to conform.
