If we don't, we get locked into a loop where the big businesses keep buying out competitors and then using their influence to lobby politicians who also have an interest in that business. When a district has one factory and that factory has a government contract, who will police it?
We need to increase the number of nodes/interests and a rigorous separation between corporation and state. You want to save capitalism? You want to save free markets? The answer is labor unions, coops, sensible regulation, dismantling the finance aristocracy, and small business friendly structures.
I'm not saying we should rely on the free market for everything, but if you're someone who does believe in it, then massive reforms in campaign finance, business law, etc etc are required to ensure that businesses don't warp the rules to block out competitors as they have.
