Fired federal workers share the crucial jobs no longer being done Thousands of probationary federal employees received termination notices. Many were doing crucial work at science-related agencies.

Six fired federal employees told me and @alexviveros.bsky.social about their science-related jobs — and what the public could lose without them.

We talked to people from NIH, FDA, FAA, NPS, the Forest Service, and Fish & Wildlife for @sciencenews.bsky.social.

Who are the indirect costs of NIH research? We talked to 3 The funding agency aims to cap “indirect costs” in biomedical research grants. But this behind-the-scenes work is crucial to making research happen.

These people's jobs are "indirect costs" on NIH grants. Here's what science and medicine could lose without them.

@alexviveros.bsky.social and I talked to a pre-award administrator, systems engineer and flow cytometry specialist for @sciencenews.bsky.social. www.sciencenews.org/article/indi...

Antiviral protects guinea pigs against lethal arenaviruses Compound remained effective even when treatment was delayed

I also covered a recent paper about an antiviral called 4′-fluorouridine that protected guinea pigs against Lassa virus and Junin virus. The compound worked even when treatment was delayed until after the onset of clinical signs of disease in the animals.

Single mutation to bird flu protein altered receptor specificity in lab Study reports that wild-type H5N1 hemagglutinin preferentially binds avian-type receptors

Two stories in @cenmag.bsky.social this week. I spoke to James Paulson and Ian Wilson at Scripps Research about their new study in Science, which found that one mutation to the hemagglutinin protein of an H5N1 virus switched the protein’s binding specificity from avian- to human-type receptors.

I’m the current Editorial Fellow at Chemical & Engineering News and a recent graduate of MIT’s science writing program. I mainly write about infectious diseases and the viruses, bacteria, and other little things that cause them.

Feel free to DM me with any story ideas (or just to say hi).
