Happy Appomattox Day to all who celebrate, and even those who don’t.
This, and the fact that--as early as World War I--the US was promised a future of casualty-free warfare (from the US side, of course) in which war injury is the exception and not--as has been the case throughout history--the inescapable norm.

Thanks. I still can't believe the SMH folks (or anyone) liked it.
Glad to see this is "official."
I look forward to accepting the award in Arlington, VA. Hope to see you there.
I am humbled to announce that "World War Zoos" won the 2026 Distinguished Book Award from the Society of Military History. Thanks to everyone who believed in the book! share.google/G2gxOFSy2ZcF...

Step 2: loosen the rules of combat, normalizing higher numbers of non-American casualties.
Step 3: fight much weaker enemies that have little hope of striking US civilians.
Step 4: make talking about US casualties seem unpatriotic or treasonous, as Pete Hegseth would like us to believe.
What we are seeing in Iran is the product of a decades-long project to remove US casaulties from the calculus of American warfare.
Step 1 : remove, as much as possible, US bodies from the field of fire, replacing them with machines.
Trump says that “every time you see someone with missing arms or legs” or a face that’s been “shattered” it was most likely caused by an Iranian “road side bomb.”
Facts and history--they don't matter, not when there are wars to justify.

“Are you talking to me?” This week is the 50th anniversary of Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver. Historian @jasonhiggins.bsky.social explains how Taxi Driver, like many #VietnamWar era films, contains historical truths but also reinforces deeply problematic myths about veterans, homecoming, & trauma. 🗃️

The executive order should be called “Restoring Lies and Insanity to American History.” Another example of “What We Learned from the Lost Cause.”
Excited to announce that I'll be giving a Legacy Lecture at the George Marshall Foundation in this April.

This collection proved essential when writing my dissertation (then book) on disabled veterans. And I just scratched the surface.

Jen Murray and I just had a great time recording an episode of the Cross Word Books podcast (out soon).
If anyone wants to chat about our new book on #CivilWar memory and American polarization, just hit us up.
I can't wait to read this. Admittedly, I am not very good at keeping track of references to my work. I am just humbled by the fact that, given all the brilliant folks working on these topics, people still find my work on disabled vets useful. (Not fishing for compliments.)
Hot new #AMA is here right now #Skystorians! @johnmkinder.bsky.social and Jen Murray are here to talk about the American Civil War, what it means for us today, and so much more! #CivilWar

I am crushed that this is happening in Minneapolis...or anywhere for that matter. For the safety of everyone, abolish ICE.
