This, and the fact that--as early as World War I--the US was promised a future of casualty-free warfare (from the US side, of course) in which war injury is the exception and not--as has been the case throughout history--the inescapable norm.

Step 2: loosen the rules of combat, normalizing higher numbers of non-American casualties.

Step 3: fight much weaker enemies that have little hope of striking US civilians.

Step 4: make talking about US casualties seem unpatriotic or treasonous, as Pete Hegseth would like us to believe.

What we are seeing in Iran is the product of a decades-long project to remove US casaulties from the calculus of American warfare.

Step 1 : remove, as much as possible, US bodies from the field of fire, replacing them with machines.

Iran Live Updates: Trump Speaks as U.S. Sends More Forces to Mideast

Trump says that “every time you see someone with missing arms or legs” or a face that’s been “shattered” it was most likely caused by an Iranian “road side bomb.”

Facts and history--they don't matter, not when there are wars to justify.

From Gettysburg to Minneapolis: How the American Civil War continues to shape how we understand contemporary political conflicts and their dangers As anger about the presence of ICE in Minneapolis divided the nation, Americans turned to the American Civil War for metaphors.

Minneapolis is Gettysburg? Tim Walz is Jeff Davis?

See our brief piece in The Conversation on why folks use the Civil War to make sense of current events.
