Super excited, but Caitlin Parker as an adult heroine makes me feel so old.

13. The Art of Ste Johnson (Released 1/3/26)

The 'Worlds in Progress Podcast' is now avaliable to non-patreons! its basicially @andy3e.bsky.social and @badsocialism.bsky.social talking with a guest about Star Trek and World Building. It's not half bad if we do say so ourselves so go give it a whirl.

Absolutely, that’s when it’s become a problem. I don’t want them dictating the new books I get to read.

In general, I try not to judge my fellow readers. I’m just glad they’re reading anything at all.

But, damn if they don’t make it hard sometimes. 🤦‍♀️

Our country has never been more divided, but Americans across the spectrum of backgrounds, regions, religions, ideologies, and all our other myriad differences just watched Artemis II launch and felt proud. That's pretty great. Thanks, NASA.

My favorite episode so far of Worlds in Progress. I especially enjoyed @seanferrick.bsky.social’s questions about nostalgia and his commentary on how to review #StarTrek.

I have! That’s an excellent example. I’ve been meaning to revisit it and then read the other novels for years now.

I actual think historical fantasy and mystery authors are often better at it than straight fiction writers.

Truly excellent historical fiction (of any genre) only happens when the author seamlessly integrates the fruits of their research into their prose.

Started a new book where the author keeps clumsily dropping historical facts into extra clauses and it bothers me. #booksky #reading #books

Manchild two tables down from dinner being more obnoxious than the toddler who stole my chopstick.

Complaint I never expected to have as a parent:

My toddler won’t quietly eat his oatmeal because your hotel breakfast room is too acoustically interesting and he likes playing with his voice.

IDK, dark things *happen*, but the books themselves aren’t pervasively dark. I think you hit the nail on the head with hope. It’s hard for a story to be truly dark when the tone and characters are hopeful.

Also, the ideal magic school TV show exists. It is called The Magicians, it's an extremely loose adaptation of a (very good) trilogy, and it rules. Just watch that instead!

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! Or in my case Wear Green to Cope with Childhood Trauma Day. All thanks to the 10 year old boys who didn’t realize green comes in multiple shades.

ABOUT THE TYPE
This book was set in Walbaum, a typeface designed in 1810 by German punch cutter J. E.
(Justus Erich) Walbaum (1768-1839). Wal-baum's type is more French than German in appearance. Like Bodoni, it is a classical type-face, yet its openness and slight irregularities give it a human, romantic quality.

I‘m not sure why, but I find it charming when a book tells me about its typeface. Probably because it makes the book I’m holding feel more connected to the earliest printed books. #booksky #books #reading

One of the reasons I was most upset about moving overseas in 1996 is that I couldn’t watch Space Cases anymore. Science fiction made for 8 year old me? More, please!

a woman with red hair is holding a heart and the word favorite is above her Alt: Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly says “favorite” and points at a cadet on Starfleet Academy.

Just finished the #StarfleetAcademy finale. Slam Dunk. Best first season of any streaming era live action #StarTrek. I look forward to season 2 and hopefully more. The storytelling throughout has just been so *balanced* in a way that I’ve found lacking in other series. Love it. Absolutely love it.

Over the past decade I’ve developed a real problem with sequels. I keep forgetting to read them or putting them off. I finally finished a sequel that’s been sitting on my shelf since 2022 and I’m so grateful I went back to finish the story. #booksky #books #reading

Thank you! Now I know what to look for - megahedral dice.

Yes, size is the biggest concern. I’ve found felt and crocheted or knit dice online, but nothing that would roll similarly to regular dice.

Feeling extremely lucky tonight after playing D&D with our friends while baby hangs out and Eric cooks us all a delicious meal. Everything is so hard these days that it’s important to savor the joy.

(Also, does anyone know where I can find baby safe dice?)
