He can't remember who the Third Lay is because he's demented. It's fairly common in dementia patients who have been married more than once to not recognize the second (or third) wife & to be querulous and fretful when some other woman is standing beside him and people are saying "there's your wife."

My husband has dementia and today he asked my son where I was when I was standing next to him. It’s quite common in those suffering from dementia.
