Having advocated for the past for the clinical psych internship to be made postdoctoral, I felt like I ought to explain why I'm not still pushing for that (currently). Jason Washburn was in a similar position so we made this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9beX...

More to come as this has many implications for police and other first responders.
Thank you to my co-presenter Jonathon Boyd for bringing a police perspective into this work!
🌐 Lots of work to still do in this area but the traditional idea of weekly treatment doesn’t have to stay. If someone breaks their leg, it is easily possible to take a few weeks off to have surgery or to heal. Why can’t we think about mental health in a similar matter?
🔍 Did you know that police are about twice as likely to develop PTSD compared to civilians due to exposure to traumatic events?
🚓 Weekly treatment doesn't work for everyone – there are too many barriers like scheduling issues, choosing between making money or losing money, being called out, etc.
🚨 Presented at International Association of Chiefs of Police and thrilled to share insights on innovative PTSD treatment for our #Police and #LawEnforcement 👮♂️
💡 We showed that DAILY treatment works to reduce #PTSD symptoms by 60-70%. We can take PTSD treatments and do them daily for 2-3 weeks!
We couldn’t do this at the Strong Star Training Initiative without support from the Bob Woodruff Foundation and the Gavin Farrell Foundation!
Picture is of Zoom meeting with a screen full of 25 different individuals. These individuals were the training staff and those attending the training. Each person is in their own zoom window.
We were able to train ~70 new clinicians (licensed and trainees) in CPT for #PTSD. This learning community will provide ongoing consultation and support for the implementation of CPT (not just a two-day training). Can’t wait to see the impact they have in their communities across the country!
Wow - can’t wait to see who fills that amazing spot! Truly a fantastic group that keeps growing :)
Excited to see this started!
It’s terrible that we have this going on 😞
Yes!
I think there could be a few models that would work if well thought out. And that might even be multiple streams. I think the large issues brought up here are important to our field to consider. Implementation would still probably be rough 😂😭. This is something to tackle though.
You got to this before me. I agree this would probably happen to - at least over time.
I think there’s room for a variety of models that would be beneficial. I’m not sure I’m sold on removing internship totally just yet. I also really think the current form is not the right way to do it.
I think that depends on how clinical psychology is defined then? I think there are lots of people doing amazing work on psychopathology and intervention that haven’t done clinical work. I think there is added value to the clinical piece including the internship level hours as well.
Hiii!
This is what I worry about. I actually think the experience is really critical for our field. Now, that doesn’t mean the current system is the right version…
Woo - thank you! I’m slowly moving over and getting active :)
Stay tuned for updates on my next steps, and let's stay connected!
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the first responders who have allowed us to be part of their journey towards wellness. Please stay in touch, and if we haven't had the pleasure of connecting yet, I'd be delighted to do so in the future.
While this chapter of my journey concludes, my commitment to supporting our first responder communities remains unwavering. New and exciting opportunities are on the horizon, and I am eager to continue contributing to the well-being of those who serve and protect.
In the past two years alone, our collective efforts have translated into tangible impact for our first responders (#lawenforcement #firefighters #dispatch). It's truly inspiring to see the positive change we've been able to effect.
Our focus on supporting first responder communities across Florida and the nation has been deeply rewarding, and I'm immensely proud of the strides we've made.
Working alongside some of the most passionate and genuine individuals has been an absolute privilege. Together, we've dedicated ourselves to a mission that is close to my heart – restoring lives, families, and communities.
