I've never understood descriptivism. It's like looking at a map of Pangea and saying the UK shouldn't exist.
Use determines meaning. The academic recognises this, catalogues and archives histories, then accurately describe changes.
Especially so with symbols, all of which are, by nature, metaphors

Unfortunately, use determines meaning. Consider the swastika - it's not a symbol of peace any more, nor will it ever be. The meaning of the inverted cross has changed now. Symbols are just language, and language is constantly in charge. It's just life 🤷🏻♂️
