Climate anxiety (CA) isn’t the problem. Powerlessness is.
Two papers. Two key findings:

No link with generalised anxiety or unhealthy behaviours (when CA is measured without including functional impairment)

More climate action - but only when people have self-efficacy.

Disconnection can blunt the pain. But it also narrows our sense of who we are.
Like a tree unaware its own branch is being cut.
Connection hurts—but it’s also where purpose lives.

It’s associated with greater well-being, meaning, and even joy.
But it also makes us more open to grief.
That’s the quiet cost of belonging.

When we feel part of the natural world, its damage becomes personal.
Psychologists call this nature connectedness—not just liking nature, but feeling yourself as part of it.

Some people experience climate change as a threat ‘out there.’
Others feel it like a wound in their own body.
Why?

Our paper is out! Low self efficacy dampens the positive relationship between climate anxiety and pro-environmental behaviours. This has policy and clinical implications.
