If you are used to attending or watching ACIP metings, it is difficult to describe just how disturbing this one has been. People talking over one another, confusion, outright ignorance. Compare this to the very orderly, sedate, consideration of facts of previous meetings for years and years.

About the detection of bird flu virus in raw milk in CA:
CDC, others warn against drinking raw milk.
CDFA routinely tests raw milk in bulk tanks.
This batch discovered because Santa Clara County health staff buy and test raw milk from retail stores for another line of defense.
Public health, y’all.

California Department of Public Health

It’s a good thing that Santa Clara County & their #publichealth #laboratory routinely samples and tests retail raw milk as a consumer safety service. And that CDPH acted so quickly with the below warning.

Tomorrow is #PublicHealthThankYou day— We thank them for this service.

Bird flu found in sample of California raw milk: Officials The California Department of Public Health warned consumers on Sunday to avoid consuming any from the same lot of raw milk.

‘The FDA has previously warned of the possible dangers of drinking raw milk. In a statement from May 2024, it warned, "Raw milk can carry dangerous germs such as Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter, and others that cause foodborne illness, often called 'food poisoning.'"’

The future of public health is clearly in uncharted waters. But never forget, public health is bigger than any one person. It's about communities coming together and advocating for evidenced-based decision-making and policies that protect everyone.

Data | Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Data published by CDC public health programs to help save lives and protect people from health, safety, and security threats.

I thought it might be worthwhile to do a quick primer on CDC.gov datasets and public data resources.

1. DATA.CDC.GOV (data.cdc.gov/browse)
Datasets from across the agency, in browsable, machine readable format (Socrata system). Other/older collections are on:

2. WONDER.CDC.GOV (wonder.cdc.gov)

Here’s How CDC Can Put the ‘Public’ Back in Public Health The new leader of the CDC should prioritize the people it serves, people in the agency itself and people who exert power over public health

Excellent piece by Dr. Choski and good solid advice. Plus, this is my first Bluesky post :)
