WE WON. I am *begging* you to take note of who did this. *Not* UCLA admin—they’re still scuttling around behind closed doors, attempting to appease—but FACULTY AND STAFF, led by AAUP.

pasteable:

Haha, I got you! The word you're looking for is actually "pasteable" (with an "e"). But the correct term is often "copy-pasteable," which describes something that can easily be copied and pasted. Glad to hear I’m helping with your homework though! Anything you're working on right now?

On Criticism: Studying How We Are Together | Portable Gray: Vol 7, No 2

because I need to be with you, because I want to learn from you and learn with you. I have been studying how we can be together. I have been studying how we are together. — in Fred Moten Commencement Speech, Stateville Correctional Facility, 2022 [quoted in www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1...

Y’all shouldn’t be in here; none of y’all who are here, anywhere, should be in here. I don’t want you to be in here and I don’t want to be in here with you, but I am so happy and so proud to be here because I am happy and proud to be with you,

Tomorrow the UC regents are meeting at UCSF to discuss Trump's extortion attempt. This is a defining moment for the UC system, for public education, and for the university as an institution. We demand no concession, no capitulation, no cuts.

maybe the undergrad class is

a core thing (e.g. light)
complicated (e.g. light not just x but also y, z)
but also organized (e.g light in art = light as a, b, c, d)
but also urgent (e.g. light as power)
but also tangible/fun (e.g. light all around you)
but also not the whole story (e.g. darkness)

recent reads:

- Extractive Capitalism / L Khalili
- The Vegetarian + The White Book / Han Kang
- Otherlands: A Journey Through Earth's Extinct Worlds / T. Halliday
- The Invention of Clouds / R Hamblyn
- The Left Hand of Darkness / U K Le Guin
- Tyranny of the Minority / L + Z

keeping it eclectic

Can’t put words to it, but reading/holding John Berger’s notebooks is moving, prismatic, fascinating. Also: didn’t expect to find him writing 11 pages of detailed notes on (from what I can tell) Isaac Asimov’s The Universe. Quasars and all. Bits in British Library for my new book or something else

was toying with something maybe related recently, thinking of political exercises of certain “memetic virtues,” eg coded, in-group refusal of virtues, or vices as virtues, as exercised in shares, speech acts, memes, photo ops (a communal vice playing) - this playing on concept of epistemic virtue

Han Kang: “Only in the gap between darkness and light, only in that blue-tinged breach, do we manage to make out each other’s faces.”

Imagining this same thought in Le Guin’s character Genly Ai, looking out to Estraven’s face in their journey across the ice, the two books blending

Han Kang: “There is none of us whom life regards with any partiality. Sleet falls as she walks the streets, holding this knowledge inside of her.”

Reading now The White Book, having just finished The Left Hand of a Darkness. Works somehow.

Perhaps the most perverse part of CASA, other than its horrific impact on the infants of immigrants, is its timing. For four years, the Supreme Court sat back as a hand-selected group of far-right judges issued a stream of universal injunctions against the Biden administration. Then, barely five months into Trump’s second term, it suddenly cut down the practice. The court has applied an egregious double standard that awards Republican presidents with sweeping authority and presumptive legitimacy while relentlessly curtailing executive power each time a Democrat occupies the Oval Office. No democracy can long survive a regime in which a monarchical president and his black-robed collaborators supplant the Constitution with their own partisan whims.

Republican presidents get power and Democratic presidents don't. That's what the last four years of SCOTUS boils down to. slate.com/news-and-pol...

... the lawyer a reputation; the landlord a town; and the tailor, as in England, BUILDS up a suit of clothes. A fire is BUILT instead of made, and the expression is even extended to individuals, to be BUILT being used with the meaning of formed. [Farmer, "Slang and Its Analogues," 1890]

Not expecting a response but why not try. Anyone know what Cooper sentence or passage this paraphrases?

In the United States, ['built'] is used with much more latitude than in England. There, as Fenimore Cooper puts it, everything is BUILT. The priest BUILDS up a flock; the speculator a fortune...

Moten: “The beautiful that’s inseparable from the terrible—that’s too nasty to be sublime, too flavorful to be in good taste, too syncopic to get fixed, too different to be one, too twenty-one to be nineteen, too then to be now, too open and close to be proximate—is what we share, in study.”

#NoKings and its crossed-out crown logo against a blue background with the words No Kings repeated.

There are now more than 2000 #NoKings events scheduled for all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, Guam and about a dozen foreign countries.

RSVPs are skyrocketing, which is particularly worth noting because a lot of people are very understandably dead set against RSVPing.

We will not back down.
