More than 50% of climate pollution in Toronto comes from burning gas to heat buildings

The good news is, we can solve this.

A Toronto Star headline that states: 'Toronto's air quality among the most polluted in the world Thursday morning as wildfire smoke lingers'

Included with the headline is an image of a cyclist in downtown Toronto wearing a mask.

Summer should be a time to enjoy being outside, not feel anxiety & isolation under smoky skies.

It's ok to feel like this isn't normal. These #wildfires are fueled by tinder dry forests from a warming planet. To fight them, we must stop burning climate-heating fossil fuels.

But you're not alone!

If you are one of the 75,000 people who take the TTC on Dufferin & Bathurst every day, you know this view: stuck in traffic.

We urge Council to support these vital transit lanes today including plans from @MayorOliviaChow & @BravoDavenport to get moving on lanes north of Bloor.

A statement posted to linked by the Toronto Region Board of Trade which reads:
"Congestion is the top challenge facing Toronto today, already costing businesses valuable time and lost revenue. While we recognize prioritizing transit on Dufferin and Bathurst as a step in the right direction, we recommend that City officials revisit and expand the proposed hashtag#RapidTO plan to include a connection to Eglinton, which will soon host the Crosstown LRT.

Some local businesses have raised legitimate concerns about reduced car access; however, it is clear that the bigger problem facing businesses in the core is gridlock. With the FIFA World Cup on the horizon, pressure on our already overloaded transportation network will only increase. We must move forward with bold, evidence-based solutions to get people and goods moving efficiently along Toronto’s vital arterial roads." -- Giles Gherson, President & CEO, Toronto Region Board of Trade

Toronto needs more dedicated transit lanes to move more people. Toronto Region Board of Trade just endorsed both Bathurst & Dufferin #RapidTO lanes up to Eglinton.

Their message?

These lanes are good for business because they are proven to reduce congestion. We need these lanes! #topoli

A developer lobby group is legally challenging local green building policies in Ontario that are meant to make new homes less polluting and more community-friendly.

Great point- this tool could bring in hundreds of millions to sustain big investments into TTC service, flood prevention, climate action….where is it hiding?

The Transportation Tomorrow Survey from 2022 that Minister Sarkaria and Doug Ford were hiding has been released. It shows cycling commute mode share is up 300% in Old Toronto since 2001. Now sitting at 11.3% in Old Toronto wards (4, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14), 10x bigger than "1.2%"!

Matt Elliott: TTC ridership downtown is surging. Here’s why I’m worried the transit agency is going to drop the ball The TTC numbers point to a real opportunity to supercharge ridership — as long as the transit agency doesn’t mess it up.

My @torontostar.bsky.social column: I don’t want to jinx it, but there are signs of surging TTC use in Toronto’s downtown

The TTC & City Hall should seize the opportunity to grow ridership more. Things like undercover fare inspectors won’t help. Better service will.

Is this really where we’re at? Tricking people into paying fines for a trip that probably took too long and arrived late? Better idea: let’s make transit free and avoid all this crap

Mayor Olivia Chow urges Doug Ford to protect cyclists — not his own government from lawsuits At a press conference Friday, Toronto’s mayor spoke about her own experience of being injured while cycling on Bloor Street without a bike lane.

Lol "Sarkaria, a Brampton MPP, told reporters Thursday that removing the right to sue is a way to protect cyclists" - they are really scraping the bottom of the comms barrel here: www.thestar.com/news/gta/may...
