Are you curious about Civic Searchlight, the tool @nationalobserver.com made to keep track of local politics? We've sat down with some of the biggest newsrooms in Canada to walk them through it, and we can do the same for your publication (for free). Send me an email! jimmy[at]nationalobserver.com
Following up on @picardonhealth.bsky.social's column from earlier this month: This supportive housing kitchen in Victoria sat unused for a year, but change may be around the corner

Plenty of people turning up in-person tonight. My count is at 46. One person is wearing a "fuck bylaw" t-shirt.
Oh shoot, i might just pop by to listen in on my way home from work. Thanks for flagging
Yikes.
Oh??? Good to know
I will ask! Thanks for the reminder.
Disappointing.

The WIRED and WSJ articles about journalists who use AI also illustrate how the usage is due to ongoing cuts in training, mentorship, and copy editing. The journalists all understand editing and SEO are important, but don't want (or can't afford) to pay for that work and expertise from human beings
I'll look for a library copy. Thanks for the rec

Most seniors in Hong Kong do not own or drive a car, because they can get anywhere they want to with the city's robust public transport system at a taxpayer-subsidized cost of $0.26 per trip.
My parents just take random day trips for fun. That is true freedom that American seniors will never have.
crudely drawn digital image of a worm with the text 'placeholder worm ' No more excuses

Great piece! Gotta say I've almost never bought a piece of furniture new (apart from two lamps from Ikea and a storage Ottoman from Zellers/HBC).
Yesterday was the due date for 11 freedom of information requests I filed on January 30

Aaron Gunn: If the federal government truly believes in the private property rights of Canadians, they should probably stop opening every public meeting by proclaiming the gathering on the “unceded territory” of this or that First Nation. Doing so reinforces the radical and dangerous legal concept that most Canadians live on “stolen land”. This is Canada. One country. For all Canadians.
𝗠𝗣 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝙇𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙛𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝘼𝙖𝙧𝙤𝙣 𝙂𝙪𝙣𝙣: “𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙭, 𝙗𝙪𝙙.” March 11, 2026 Chiefs from four First Nations communities are urging the public to please approach Aaron Gunn with no caution whatsoever. He is completely harmless, though momentarily unsettled by the alarming possibility that someone might acknowledge the land before a meeting. Yesterday on social media, the MP appeared to crash out and demand to speak to the manager of land acknowledgements, a position that observers confirm does not exist. Chiefs whose territories make up the riding had two words for the MP - Chillax, Bud. Land acknowledgements have never seized private property, cancelled a mortgage, repossessed a pickup truck, or altered a single title deed anywhere in Canada. They are simply people recognizing the history of the place where they are standing. No one is going anywhere. Canada will survive the brief moment of honesty. Until then, Chiefs across the region continue to reassure the public that land acknowledgements have not, to date, resulted in any land back. Conservative MP for Powell River–North Island, Aaron Gunn, is, uh, well he’s being trolled a bit for his condemnation of land acknowledgements yesterday. Message from K’omoks, Klahoose, Homalco & Tla’amin Nations: “Chillax, bud.” #bcpoli

In less happy news, graduate students just voted in favour of cutting 80% of the student levy ($5, now $1) towards the school's student refugee program.
Extra disappointing since they also voted to increase a major subsidy to the grad restaurant ($13)
Congrats to @themartlet.bsky.social for convincing UVic students to pay $2 more to support their campus paper — a tiny change that will make a massive difference for the paper and its ability to cover the campus. That's a big achievement, proud of them.
