Land acknowledgements have never seized private property, cancelled a mortgage, repossessed a pickup truck, or altered a single title deed anywhere in Canada. They are simply people recognizing the history of the place where they are standing. No one is going anywhere. Canada will survive the brief moment of honesty. In less happy news, graduate students just voted in favour of cutting 80% of the student levy ($5, now $1) towards the school's student refugee program.

Extra disappointing since they also voted to increase a major subsidy to the grad restaurant ($13)

Congrats to @themartlet.bsky.social for convincing UVic students to pay $2 more to support their campus paper — a tiny change that will make a massive difference for the paper and its ability to cover the campus. That's a big achievement, proud of them.
