Mamdani is not just filling the potholes with the crew. He's creating a visual and personal reminder of the dignity inherent in all of these anonymous government jobs.

Fourteen years ago, on March 21, 2012 Rekia Boyd was spending time with friends in Douglass Park when Dante Servín, a drunk, off duty CPD officer opened fire on the group, shooting Antonio Cross and murdering Rekia.
She was my age, just 22.
May her spirit rest and her name be remembered.
It's the Human Resources meme but I don't care: Sean Penn winning his third Oscar and not being there to collect it is TRASH; Katharine Hepburn winning her third (and fourth) Oscar and not being there to collect it is FIERCE.
Javier Bardem, gem
A stone cold classic, front to back.
Imagine being 16, driving KY backroads at sunset, alone with your thoughts, then hearing “that teenage feeling” and realizing you were in the middle of an intangible, ephemerally beautiful moment that was burning itself into your soul.
Neko Case, queen.
I was born in an Iranian prison. My parents were held in their jails. My uncles lie in their mass graves. Nothing you can tell me about the crimes of the Iranian regime that I haven't lived in blood and bone. That doesn't mean I want my people bombed, maimed, killed, their homes in ruins. If your vision of liberation comes only through the destruction of innocent lives, then it's not freedom you're after. Sahar Delijani, Iranian author
I am pro Iranian people. I stand with them against their own government’s repression AND against the imperial violence in the form of bombs dropped from the sky from Israel & the US who have already killed hundreds.
I support neither imperialism or dictatorship.
Sahar Delijani said it best:
BREAKING: The two federal immigration agents who fired on Minneapolis protester Alex Pretti are identified in government records as Border Patrol agent Jesus Ochoa and Customs and Border Protection officer Raymundo Gutierrez.
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”
That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.
the agents and arbiters of state violence shouldn’t be in unions.
as demonstrated by the murder of Alex Pretti, they’re more likely to be called to violently break a movement than act in solidarity with labor.
ICE executes a man today. He came to the defense of a woman they were assaulting, they pinned him to the ground, and they executed him.
Alex Pretti was a colleague at the VA. We hired him to recruit for our trial. He became an ICU nurse- I lover working with him. He was a good kind person who lived to help and these fuckers executed him.
White. Hot. Rage.
Alex Pretti, the man killed by federal agents today in Minneapolis, appears to have been a registered nurse, an athlete, a son and a brother, with ties to Colorado and Wisconsin.
Here is a photo he used for several accounts.
Reminder that U.S. Border Patrol was created over a century ago but for the purpose of excluding specific nationalities from moving freely—attracting Klansmen to become some of the very first Border Patrol agents
I’m a simple woman. I want is to walk the streets of Chicago on a temperate night listening to Neko Case and then catch my train the moment I walk into the station. That’s the stuff.
Photograph. A large woodgrain-lined cabinet designed to hold and vend videotapes. On the right is the CRT screen interface and cash/coin insert. Instructional and "VIDEO VENDOR" signage overhead.
If you have the space, means and collection: a northern Texas warehouse full of proto-Redbox VHS vending machines from the mid-1980s is being evicted. The machines are free and whatever isn't taken will imminently be scrapped.

logging a movie on letterboxed in 2026 and also logging my initial watch in 2018. Haters will say I’m foolish but it is they who are the fools. I have anecdotes and ephemera to share
letterboxd is great because I love movies and I also use it as a mildly deranged diary for my various horrors and amusements
We’ve had 20 years to learn the lesson. And yet!
this is terrible! Illinois should learn from California’s mistakes, not repeat them!
This is more than the one-year allocation to DPD and DOH combined under the Housing and Economic Development Bond
Cool now the city needs to reject federal funding of the fusion center where cpd shares surveillance data with the forces attacking its residents

while most eyes were on greg bovino’s early morning photo op in downtown chicago this was happening 15 miles west in suburban melrose park:
video captured around 6:30 am shows a team in four vehicles detaining a person on lake street. one agent is seen rifling through the person’s car.
truly disturbing video from palatine.
agents appear to drive onto a sidewalk in pursuit. as they wrestle to put a young person in the car, the driver starts to pull away. the person recording shouts, “they’re tasing him!”
unclear if they actually used the taser, but you can hear it charging up.
they’ll certainly get dusted if they can’t be sold
goodnight, sweet prince 🫡🫡
Filmmaker Mira Nair, being happy
In the past seven (7) days I’ve seen local advocacy and determined public agencies convince the state legislature save transit, I’ve seen a socialist win the NYC mayoral race…good things are good
Too true!!
Video posted on social media captioned as Cicero, IL in the Menard’s parking lot. It shows federal agents breaking a man’s window and dragging him out of his truck. Our Mexican communities experiencing so much terror rn.
