The Devitts have seen the Idaho Legislature and the governor approve a wave of anti-LGBTQ+ bills in recent years.

Michael and Dr. Angie Devitt, both medical professionals, watched their trans daughter, Eve, testify against a bill years ago that outlawed gender-affirming care for minors.

But this year’s criminal transgender bathroom ban — described by advocates as the most extreme in the nation for extending to private businesses — was the couple’s last straw.

So early this month, Michael Devitt notified patients that his practice, Focus Physical Therapy, would shut down at the end of August as his family prepared to move out of Idaho.

“Obviously, this law is a disaster for families like ours,” he wrote in a letter. “We can no longer take a road trip across our beloved state, or even enjoy a family night out at a restaurant, or a movie, without running the risk of Eve being charged and sent to a prison merely for using the facilities.”

There are now 10 law enforcement agencies in Idaho that have agreed to partner with ICE through the 287(g) program. This program has been shown to encourage racial profiling, violate people's civil liberties, and divert public safety resources away from serious crimes. Read more: buff.ly/6tD8VDz

"I should not go to an Idaho jail for using the restroom" by Rachel Stevens.

Am I to be feared? Supposedly. Am I to be hated? That seems to be the idea. But let’s look at that. I’m a former Marine Corps Judge Advocate and respected Texas trial lawyer, now a teacher, a writer, an artist, a parent and a grandparent. I’m also a trans woman, and evidently that scares some people, or stirs their hatred for those unlike themselves. Or maybe it’s simply that trans people offer them such an easy target for the kind of performative moral outrage that fuels the

Rachel Stevens is a trans woman who's used the women's restroom for more than two decades without issue. House Bill 752 would make her a criminal on the level of violent offenders for doing so.

Like many trans families, the Devitts, an upstanding family, have had enough and are leaving Idaho. Our state will be worse off for it.

If Idaho continues to try & legislate trans people out of existence, we will continue to lose too many good people.

HB 752 was signed into law, effective July 1, 2026. This bathroom law violates the safety and privacy of all Idahoans, especially the trans community.

Protecting women and girls in public spaces does not require discriminating against trans people. The trans community deserves safety and freedom.
