What's in the budget graphic: Traffic Safety
This investment would expand our traffic safety program in the areas where data shows the highest risk. It’s about preventing crashes and making our roads safer for everyone.

A powerful example of what real-time tools + community partnership can do. The @mcpd1d.bsky.social Real-Time Information Center helped locate a missing 5-year-old — safely and quickly.
This is what smart public safety investment looks like.

Expanding Access To Child Care Graphic
For many families, this is the difference between being able to work full-time. Supporting quality child care is one of the most direct ways we can support working families.

We’ve taken steps to strengthen this funding, but the need is clearly growing as threats increase. Public safety means continuing to meet this moment with real investment.
That’s why community security funding matters. This year, the program was oversubscribed—grants were reduced to ~$15K, covering just 2–3 months of costs for many orgs, including synagogues and Jewish groups facing rising antisemitic threats.
Montgomery County will not be intimidated by hate. Public safety means making sure every community—no matter their faith or background—feels safe and supported.
A synagogue in Olney was recently vandalized with hateful graffiti. This is unacceptable—and a reminder that hate is not abstract. It shows up in our communities, and we must confront it.

Councilmember Luedtke statement on Council Procedures Regarding Bill 5-26
I hear the urgency from out immigrant community – and I share it.
But urgency cannot come at the expense of durability.
I support the goal of this bill, and we need to ensure it’s legally sound so protections truly hold.
We still have work ahead to reduce gun violence and improve response times. But the progress in this report reflects increased investment in smart public safety strategies. We’ll keep building on that with our committed MCPD and DHHS partners and all our public safety professionals.
These tools that we championed on the Council are helping officers respond more effectively while the department works through ongoing staffing shortages.
Legislators supporting the Drone as First Responder program.
MCPD is also continuing to expand technology to support officers and improve operations — including Drone as First Responder, real-time intelligence, and camera integration.
Montgomery County’s 2025 Crime & Safety Report shows encouraging progress: overall crime declined 9% last year, with significant drops in property crimes like motor vehicle theft, burglary, and robbery.
