Recolectores de almas africanas: La Compañía de Jesús y la conversión de esclavizados en Cartagena de Indias y África centro-occidental (siglo XVII) Este libro, al igual que muchos otros, surgió de una duda genuina. Hace algunos años me propuse investigar la relación que existió entre algunos miembros de la Compañía de Jesús1 y las personas esclavizadas de origen africano en Cartagena de Indias. Al principio era una idea indefinida que carecía de datos concretos para respaldar mis preguntas de investigación. Aun así, dichas inquietudes iniciales condujeron esta pesquisa, que fueron impulsadas por diferentes investigadores que estaban interesados o desinteresados en esta investigación, es decir, fui inspirada por la generosidad de los estudios que me precedieron y, al mismo tiempo, fui alentada por personas que consideraban que la pesquisa no arrojaría resultado alguno, dado que, en algunas esferas, se cree que toda la documentación sobre Cartagena de Indias del siglo xvii está pérdida o que la existente es insuficiente. A pesar de estas carencias, hay una vasta historiografía sobre dicho lugar; una que, sin duda, seguirá creciendo con el paso de los años. En ese tenor, dedicaré esta parte del texto para explicar el por qué, cómo y para qué escribí estas páginas. Tratando de contextualizar al lector, me he hecho algunas cuestionamientos: ¿cómo nació la investigación?, ¿por qué seleccioné este título?, ¿a qué preguntas responde este libro?, ¿qué fuentes se necesitaron para la investigación?, ¿cómo se desarrolló la investigación?, ¿cuáles investigaciones precedieron a este libro?, ¿cuál es el contexto geográfico seleccionado? y ¿cuáles fueron los principales hallazgos y aportes? Esta necesidad de explicar cada uno de los elementos que componen este libro no es un tema menor porque, si bien abundan contextos históricos que permiten emprender un proyecto y que predominan los vacíos historiográficos que los historiadores desean (deseamos) llenar, también se deben insinuar las motivaciones personales que orientan cada una de nuestras indagaciones (o, por lo menos, mencionar algunas).
