“I will NOT sacrifice the Oxford comma. We've made too many compromises already; too many retreats. They assimilate the em dash and we fall back. They capture ‘not just X but y’ and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further!”

On this day 134 years ago, Jan. 1, 1892:

Ellis Island opens as America's primary gateway for immigrants, which it remains for over half a century. As immigrants have chosen to become American rather than merely happening to be born here, surely they should be considered the true heritage Americans.

My full statement on the cancellation of naturalization ceremonies in the community:

These ceremonies are as patriotic as you can get. I got to participate in a Tompkins County naturalization ceremony a few years back and it was incredibly joyous. Everyone was so excited to become an American and that should be celebrated

By far the scariest thing about the story that's emerging is that a young man just decided to murder a major public figure, then was very much able to without a ton of forethought. There are a lot of obvious concerns raised by that story! One of them is not, "Did he know anybody who was trans?"!

Discovering computer as an adult makes you go crazy. Discovering computer as a baby makes you go crazy. In all of human history, there will only ever be one generation to discover computer at the correct age: 13

Please nobody ever listen to such “orders”

His status is unknown at this time but he's married to a US citizen and presumably also a citizen.

I keep warning people that being legal or being a citizen (birthright or not) will not protect you from ICE if you don't look white.

You ‘run the gamut’ and ‘run the gauntlet.’

You don’t ‘run the gambit.’

gamut = entire range or series

gauntlet = severe trial

Gambit = Alpha-level mutant who can convert potential energy to kinetic energy

Israel Was Supposed to Sink Zohran Mamdani Will the Democratic Party absorb the lesson?

"Nearly 70 percent of Democrats now have an unfavorable view of Israel, according to Pew. Yet Democratic officials carry on as if full-throated support for Israel were party doctrine," writes @ryuspaeth.bsky.social. nymag.com/intelligence...

Went and I checked this, and Edwin's correct: On the left is text from the reconciliation bill "PROHIBITING FEDERAL MEDICAID AND CHIP FUNDING FOR GENDER TRANSITION PROCEDURES FOR MINORS" On the right is from the Manager's amendment that strikes the word "FOR MINORS."

How many meetings does it take in Philadelphia to build 57 affordable homes? A lot. The Philadelphia Housing Authority and developer Pennrose have been trying to get project approval since 2019. The cost has risen, and federal funding could be at risk.

"Over six years, the project’s cost has ballooned even as the number of units has shrunk. Political and regulatory hurdles created with good intentions have repeatedly stymied the project." www.inquirer.com/real-estate/...
