When public media disappears, so do the stories that bring us together.

With federal funding eliminated, millions may lose their last trusted source of news and connection.

If that matters to you, now’s the time to act. Donate: n.pr/458sOhq

ii: every Man an iSland: Male Silence
Silence is present everywhere under patriarchy, though it requires different silences from men than from women. You can imagine the policing of gender as the creation of reciprocal silences, and you can begin to recognize male silence as a tradeoff for power and membership. No one ever put it better than bell hooks, who said:
The first act of violence that patriarchy demands of males is not violence toward women. Instead patriarchy demands of all males that they engage in acts of psychic self-mutilation, that they kill off the emotional parts of themselves. If an individual is not suc- cessful in emotionally crippling himself, he can count on patriar- chal men to enact rituals of power that will assault his self-esteem.
That is, patriarchy requires that men silence themselves first (and perhaps it’s worth noting again that, though patriarchy is a system that privileges men and masculinity, many women are complicit in it, some men rebel against it, and some people are undoing the rules of gender that prop it up). This means learning not only to be silent to others but also to themselves, about aspects of their inner life and self.

Patriarchy perpetuates it to maintain its power and women's powerlessness, but as bell hooks points out (from my book The Mother of All Questions) men pay a price too: 3/3

But the statistics demonstrate this is the most pervasive violence on earth, that it has an economic impact (hospitalization and missed work costs alone!), and that it has racial dimensions, including with the MMIW (missing and murdered Indigenous women) pandemic. 2/3

"In the US, there’s a rape every 68 seconds, a woman is beaten by an intimate partner every nine seconds.... Globally a woman or girl is murdered by her partner or family member every 10 minutes."

The problem is far bigger than Jeffrey Epstein | Rebecca Solnit Treating the scandal as an aberration misunderstands the global epidemic of violence against women

"One of the reasons the epidemic of violence against women is so unacknowledged is because cases like these are talked about individually, and often treated as though they are shocking aberrations rather than part of a pervasive pattern that operates at all levels of society."

If you were born between 1970-1990 you may not have full MMR protection, even if you had parents who took you for all your jabs. The NHS will give you a free booster. With cases surging, this is a great way to protect yourself & your community. I’m getting mine tomorrow www.nhs.uk/vaccinations...

Poison specialist here! Vegetable oils are not poisonous. The Health Secretary - who has no background in health or science - is either lying, or stupid, or both. You can take this as seriously as you would your creepy uncle who talks about chemtrails.

The US wants a wearable for all. Experts say it won’t fix the health crisis The Secretary of Health Services wants every American to use a wearable device in the next four years. Experts say it's a great move, but not a cure-all.

They are eugenicists who believe if you get sick it’s your fault, and wearables will provide them with “data” for the conclusion they’ve already reached. That’s it.

It was my honor to work with distinguished lawyer colleagues on this statement of commitment to the principles that must undergird American democracy. It appears today as full page ad in the @nytimes.com & in papers around the country.

I look at this photo of Jupiter and think, yes, beauty still exists.

Literally cannot count how many times we have said this. We even had a whole war over it! Look at the Civil Rights Movement! I wrote about white backlash politics at 16 because it was that obvious. It’s willful denial of white supremacy that allows white folks to think that this came from nowhere.

Sorry. Your feelings can be wrong. If you feel that Iranian-Americans are out to get you or trying to establish a caliphate, your feelings are racist junk mail. And taking those feelings as facts is how we got neocons and MAGA.

The *reason* Ai-generated text contains semicolons, en dashes etc. is that experienced, skilful writers use these marks to subtly convey meaning and nuance in their work. And the Ai LLMs have been trained on the stolen work of experienced, skilful writers.

The maddening thing is that this would have been PAINFULLY OBVIOUS if they had ANY EXPERIENCE AT ALL working with the government! In any way! Or if they had asked a single question!! 😖
