It costs $1 to mail a postcard across the country. Of course it's not profitable! That's not the damn point! The point is keeping people connected and this is especially true in rural, remote and Northern communities where for-profit courier services will *never* fill the gap.

It's a bloodbath for science, health, immigration, Canada Post, and many many other services and supposed Canadian values.

Almost everyone in the US has seen these photos at some point: Nazi book burnings, seared into our national psyche as the quintessential expression of fascist tyranny. But few people know what books they were burning, beyond the fact that many of the books’ authors were Jewish.

Yes, a school was bombed. During the day. Repeatedly.

Yes, at least 150 children were killed.

Yes, the USA did it.

Yes, AI was involved.

Humanity heating planet faster than ever before, study finds Researchers identify sharp rise to about 0.35C every decade, after excluding natural fluctuations such as El Niño

Notwithstanding that the extractivist class in the Canadian west will see the war in Iran as an excuse to demand more pipeline infrastructure, we continue to ignore the crisis of global warming.

I just did the dumbest thing of my entire career to prove a much more serious point.

I tricked ChatGPT and Google, and made them tell other users I’m a competitive hot-dog-eating world champion

People are using this trick on a massive scale to make AI tell you lies. I’ll explain how I did it

China should be advancing their solar project in Cuba and expanding it at great speed unfortunately they don’t seem to care that much. They could make the whole island energy independent ready if they wanted to within a year probably. Especially if Cuba kept producing its own oil

OpenClaw is interesting, but will also drain your wallet if you aren't careful.
Last night around midnight I loaded my Anthropic API account with $20, then went to bed.
When I woke up, my Anthropic balance was $O.
Opus was checking "is it daytime yet?" every 30 minutes, paying $0.75 each time to conclude "no, it's still night."
Doing literally nothing, OpenClaw spent the entire balance. How?

The "Heartbeat" cron job, even though literally the only thing I had going was one silly reminder, ("remind me tomorrow to get milk")
1. Sent ~120,000 tokens of context to Opus
4.5
2. Opus read HEARTBEAT md, thought about reminders
3. Replied "HEARTBEAT_OK"
4. Cost: ~$0.75 per heartbeat (cache writes)
The damage:
- Overnight = ~25+ heartbeats
- 25 × $0.75 = ~$18.75 just from heartbeats alone
- Plus regular conversation = ~$20 total
The absurdity: Opus was essentially checking
"is it daytime yet?" every 30 minutes, paying $0.75 each time to conclude "no, it's still night."

I’m starting to think the people who are excited about “AI agents” have literally never used a computer in their lives

at least 70% of the AI hype that’s bottom-up — eg, excited users — is people who never learned how to actually use their computer suddenly realizing the computer can do things for them

Not my first, but I LOVED that game! It was pretty hard so I struggled to get very far in it but I'd play it just to listen to the soundtrack sometimes.

Saskatoon freezing killings - Wikipedia

I've been seeing people excitedly share how cold it is going to be in Minneapolis tomorrow and relishing how ICE will deal with it, as if ICE won't choose that day to do some starlight tours.

People will have to be even more vigilant, over a wider area.

Saskatoon is my city. I really wish we were known for something else, but unfortunately this really happened. It was practically official police policy for decades.

I highly recommend this podcast about Neil Stonechild's death by the police: www.listennotes.com/podcasts/unm...

lots of people misremember the Y2K bug as a media hype story but in reality nothing happened cuz people actually stepped up and fixed shit. if it happened now we’d be fucked. maga would tell people Y2K is fake news / people would refuse to update their computers because they “did their own research”

When American libs call Maduro a “brutal dictator” what they mean is he won’t hand his country’s resources over to US corporations.

We owe our unshakable solidarity to the people of Venezuela against the shameless, nakedly criminal actions of US imperialists in kidnapping a sovereign nation’s elected leader on fraudulent charges for transparently ideological reasons. The lawless terror of US hegemony threatens the whole world. 🇻🇪

For the record, "I'm not that upset because Maduro was bad" is the culmination of a decades long propagandizing against Venezuela. That attitude is exactly what they want.

The FBI Faked an Entire Field of Forensic Science For more stories like this, like Slate on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

Reminder that years ago it was found out that the FBI straight up made up a whole bunch of fake forensic sciences, plural. People have gone to jail and been executed due to literally pseudoscience.

Hair forensics, for instance, is totally nonsense.

They admitted it.

With everything happening at CBS, I think rhetoric about supporting alt media can give us a false sense of control. We have to grasp the reality that news outlets have always been on the side of the institutions. What we’re seeing now is a logical outgrowth of the US’ political instability 1/

A while back I said that I support trans rights for two main reasons:

1. Basic human rights and decency etc
2. If they come for trans folk that means they'll go after other people with atypical brains next

and, well... sucks to be right
