New Documents Reveal a Controversial Vaccine Study's Unusual Path to CDC Approval A new investigation has found irregularities in the ethics review of a grant to study effects of a birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine in Guinea-Bissau.

This a great piece of investigative journalism. @rollingstone.com
This should be required reading for scientists and ethicists.
Ethics matter, especially in science.

In summary, from both a personal and professional perspective, to hinder access to HPV vaccine would be to directly cause preventable deaths in both men and women, and to cost the U.S. $8B per year.

And I will fight it with everything in my power, I can promise you that.

An overpass occupied by people with signs, and a large banner between them that says, "Come for one, face us all." Because Fuck ICE, that's why. This is not my photo. I don't know who it belongs to.

I inserted myself into a conversation at a bar about Covid and vaccines. Here’s what happened What happened when a public health scientist overheard four men sharing misinformation about Covid — and decided to talk to them about it.

Happy Birthday, Rosalind Franklin. She captured an X-ray diffraction image of DNA and stated that a helical structure was probable. Watson and Crick then created a detailed model based on her results. They initially received credit for the discovery and were awarded the Nobel Prize after her death.🧪

Childhood leukemia: how a deadly cancer became treatable Before the 1970s, most children affected by leukemia would quickly die from it. Now, most children in rich countries are cured.

Before the 1970s, a child diagnosed with leukemia had a 90% chance of dying within 5 years.

Today, those odds are flipped: they have an almost 90% chance of survival.

My colleague @scientificdiscovery.dev's article on progress against childhood cancer.

N.I.H. Workers Denounce Trump’s ‘Harmful’ Health Policies

One of the greatest tragedies of the gutting of the federal government is the loss of dedicated scientists who chose to work in public service for the benefit of the American people.

This letter is both incredibly brave and a testament to their integrity.

A spatial transcriptomic atlas of acute neonatal lung injury across development and disease severity A molecular understanding of lung organogenesis requires delineation of the timing and regulation of the cellular transitions that ultimately form and support a surface capable of gas exchange. “God, No, Not Another Case.” COVID-Related Stillbirths Didn’t Have to Happen. A lack of testing data and government guidance led many to avoid the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy, unwittingly increasing their chances of a stillbirth.

In light of today’s recommendation on COVID vaccines for pregnant women, this 2022 piece by
@deldeib.bsky.social is newly relevant.

Is flat 15% fair? An NIH funding policy is misguided and damaging

'NIH suggests that indirect and direct costs are substitutes when in reality they are complements: (...) If NIH puts more money into direct project funding, that funding generates additional indirect costs for more labs, more safety & compliance officers, and more buildings & their utility costs.'

“Too many people take biomedical innovation for granted.”
Below this is a screenshot from an article on the Atlantic.com. Highlighted is the text: “A child born with cystic fibrosis in the 50s could expect to live until age 5. In the 70s, age 10. In the early 2000s, age 35. With Trikafta came a quantum leap. Today those who begin taking the drug in early adolescence, a recent study projected, can expect to survive to age 82.5 - an essentially normal lifespan.”

I remember the cystic fibrosis patients I took care of 20 years ago.

I also remember the dedicated HIV wards in the hospitals, and that Princess Diana made headlines for shaking hands with AIDS patients.

Progress has been incredible.

Miracles are where you choose to see them.
