When clouds drop below a distant horizon at our elevation or lower, we see curvature of the earth.

A side-lit blue-gray compound of five cubes 400 feet across and having overall icosahedral symmetry hovers over a late-wintry body of water bordered by jutting, evergreen-covered shores. On a flat dun area in the middle distance, barely-visible figures walk beneath the cubes' bottom vertex.

"Collaboration," a new postcard design. This is the tenth image in a series of digital overlays. I'm working on packaging these as sets at www.diffgeom.com

In each, the prospect of a pattern in the digits of pi serves as a compelling, as-yet unfulfilled cosmic promise. In that, each may have interesting non-mathematical (or not-necessarily mathematical) bearing on a human search for Meaning.

The Mountains of Pi The Chudnovsky brothers yearned to probe the mystery of pi, so they built their own supercomputer out of mail-order parts.

Tangentially, have you come across Richard Preston's 1992 piece The Mountains of Pi in The New Yorker, and/or Darren Aronofsky's (similar in certain respects, though not based upon as far as I know) 1998 movie Pi?

Offhand "a sense of resolution," but that could occur for multiple reasons, including noticing or rigorously establishing an underlying pattern, finding a satisfying verbal explanation, having a calculation confirm geometric intuition or a lengthy calculation yield a simple formula, ....

On that note, about 10-15 years ago, a young relative was offered extra credit in a high school course for memorizing 100 digits. One doesn't like to disapprove, but ... why?

An enormous transparent sphere looms over frozen water and a distant shore under a foreboding sky. Gray spiral bands swoop upward toward a bright spot at the zenith. Beautiful mathematics to some; a dangerous sham promise of power and apotheosis to others.

"Bubble," a postcard image (digital overlay) depicting a seductive sham of apotheosis.

As mathematicians in 2026, we need to be Very Careful we are not inadvertently developing virtual tools of enormous power for those of questionable judgment and inhuman values.

Unfortunately for present purposes, as a tween I memorized [a fair number of] decimals, starting from the Time-Life volume "Mathematics" and later using Petr Beckmann's "A History of Pi."

But offhand, I know pi/2 ~= 1.57 and no further (and similarly for 2*pi, come to think...)

I'm working on a set of mathematical postcards, some entirely digital but several digital overlays on photographs. Here, a conformally-parametrized torus tessellated by regular hexagons looms in an afternoon sky about last Wednesday.

An infinite green coordinate grid seen in perspective against a black background. The standard parabola is plotted in blue, and integer points are marked with gold dots. From our vantage point, the parabola is circular, with two limbs stretching toward the horizon at infinity. The equation of the parabola floats at this vanishing point on the y-axis.

Working on a set of mathematical postcards, both digital "scenes" and overlays on photos. Here we see the parabola y=x^2, a conic section, as a circle.

For now this is a 3-inch matte black self-adhesive sticker:

A digital image of a blue-and-cyan banded doughnut overlaid on a photograph of a spring sky bordered by oak trees breaking out in catkins

The book's dedication reads, "For everyone possessed of curiosity, honesty, and kindness." The image extends the dedication visually. Math, particularly real analysis, seems larger than us, yet is insubstantial, a creation of minds. Like all human creations made with good intent, math can be weaponized. Publishing a textbook that aims to present a body of traditionally-difficult material is therefore potentially perilous. But there is no way to publish or teach without risk; one can only be explicit about the perils, and enjoin learners to steer clear.

"Vortex" is a remake of the cover image of "An Invitation to Real Analysis" as a postcard. The looming sky torus is the image of a ray of slope ฯ€ on a square torus, with color along the ray graded to highlight ฯ€~=22/7.

Collage of five geometrical drawings - colored in the style of stained glass with watercolor pencils. Orthographic projections of functions used in physics, constructed from their 2D projections: Cones related to the theory of the gyroscope, Lissajous Figures, spins and stereographic projection, a mathematical tower from a spherical harmonic function.

I am using traditional descriptive geometry and watercolor pencils to turn functions used in physics into cathedrals from stained glass.

Thank you for trying out the software!

I'm afraid that (unlike with Pirouette, the Spirograph clone) there's currently no path editing capability. Adding that is on a nebulous to-do list (along with a mode for drawing line segments by clicking their endpoints, IIRC)....
