Enjoyed it greatly.

But... though I'm not a discerning film critic... was it derivative of Lost in Translation?

Already I'm reversing the review. On reflection, Rental Family had more interesting Japanese characters.

Feeds a line of thought that fossil fuel industry interests opposed to climate action are at the source of the crisis of our democracy.

People have hope for the Court sometimes, because Roberts is not at heart a Trumpist. But he may be owned by the fossil fuel industry.

This line of thought will make you wise.

And unpopular.

So good. Over and over again, you all make a contribution even on topics where researchers already are familiar with the data, just by making sound choices about scaling for comparability, simple spare layout, flexibility in user modification of the figure, and easy data access.

Nobody can force you to acknowledge a distinction between "left" and "liberal."

Now we can stop arguing and go back to our reading. :-)

I'm in the middle of a great book by Ta Nehisi Yglesias about the Democratic Party under Nancy Ocasio-Cortez and Chuck Sanders.

These charts come from surveys.

HERI surveys offered distinct categories for "left" and "liberal."

You have re-labeled the liberals as "left," even though the large majority of respondents were specifically offered a "left" option and declined it.

That reveals your views not the survey's facts.

Governments are actively censoring and attacking faculty -- the great worry of classical liberalism -- while FIRE lives in an alternate reality where cognitive discomfort from verbal challenges by woke people is the leading threat to intellectual freedom.

And my challenge to you is not just Honeycutt.

Your post says: "I knew academia leaned left, but I didn't realize it leaned this far left."

You should tell your readers what fraction of survey respondents were classified in these studies as "left" or "far left" to provoke such a comment.

Tamar, that's misleading.

The HERI 2016-2017 report found 11% "far left" and no growth over time in "liberal" faculty.

The chart you shared has a distinctive claim, and it's not from the HERI data.

I don't care about the "chart crime" by Nathan Honeycutt of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) as another commenter phrased it.

I care about the journalists. Any journalist quoting and sharing this chart must surely have read the methods section in the working paper.

"In the 26 seconds it takes economist @julietschor.bsky.social to walk down the aisle..."

This reminded me that I heard JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon on NPR, subtly channeling Juliet and praising shorter work weeks for high quality of life. Space does not permit me to explain how he got there.

Your post exactly captures the sleight of hand used by that movement.

They piously pretend merely to dispute characterizing emissions growth scenarios as "business as usual."

Under a harsher scatological headline that says "RCP8.5-is-BS".

If we want to succeed in democratic politics, we cannot treat more than half the voting population as our opponents.

If we have disagreements with anybody in our half of the political spectrum, it is useful to keep our arguments respectful.

Like @dakotagruener.bsky.social, every proponent of geoengineering says they want it to be a "complement not a substitute" for mitigation.

But do they speak up for mitigation?

For example, is there a single voice in that whole crowd who speaks up for demand-side policy on red meat, or aviation?

Only half of calories produced on croplands are available for human consumption, study finds Study: 1/2 of the calories produced on croplands are unavailable for human consumption

This is one of the most important issues with the global food system, yet it is often ignored.

Put simply, we don't actually grow much *food* in our farms around the world. Instead, we grow grossly inefficient animal feed and biofuels.

The Strava running/cycling/skiing tracking app is amusing during the 4 weeks after a person gives blood (which the app doesn't know). It ties itself in knots trying to tell me I've been slow, but politely enough that I won't take offense.

Failure to mobilize finance risks constraining climate action across all sectors. To get on track for 2030, the world must scale up total climate finance and end public finance for fossil fuels.

Trump administration to pay $1 billion to stop two East Coast wind farms The Interior Department reached a settlement to pay France’s TotalEnergies not to pursue two offshore wind farms but direct the investments toward fossil fuels.

This is freakin’ maddening and TotalEnergies also sponsors a world Pro Tour men’s cycling team 🚴that you can bet I will no longer be rooting for.😡

Technology can cut plane contrails by two-thirds. Getting airlines to use it isn't so easy Flights that followed an avoidance path cut contrails by almost two-thirds. But getting dispatchers and pilots comfortable with these routes will be crucial.

Great explanation from @hannahritchie.bsky.social about reducing aviation climate impacts by reducing contrails!

And the @ourworldindata.org deputy editor previously offered sensible coverage of biofuels.

A future topic idea: aviation demand reduction.

The Labour Party photograph is weird.

How did they succeed in getting all the automobiles off the road except these two?

And which of the 2 drivers do we relate to sympathetically? The tailgater or the one being tailgated?

If you think about it, why WOULD it be the responsibility of cities to provide free parking for everyone’s cars? #UrbanTruth
