Stevie Wilson DIY Young Artists Residency — Interrupting Criminalization

I secured some funding last year to revive the Stevie Wilson DIY Young Artists Residency. I’m excited to announce that applications are open today until May 11 for young artists (ages 16-24) directly impacted by criminalization, policing, or punishment.

‼️Stop the Permanent Expansion of the Youth Curfew‼️

TOMORROW 🗣️ Tuesday 4/21, DC Council votes on the permanent juvenile curfew. Curfews aren’t prevention; they’re a failure to invest in youth.

Call & email DC council & tell them to vote no! Youth need opportunities, not over-policing.

Claim:
Juvenile curfews are race-neutral.

Fact check:
Enforcement of curfews, or any other laws, has never been neutral. "Federal data shows that for decades, Black minors have been arrested for curfew and loitering charges at two or three times the rate of their white counterparts."

COLD ALERT ACTIVATED!

It’ll hit possibly freezing temps tonight in DC. There are extra hypothermia shelter beds available!

With someone’s consent, you can call the shelter hotline to have them transported to an open shelter bed — 202-399-7093

Claim:
Expanding the curfew doesn't harm youth, because nobody is getting arrested.

Fact check:
Even without arrest, contact with police while young is linked to emotional distress, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and higher likelihood of future criminal conduct.

These have gone up all over our area. A heartbreaking memorial to those people stolen from our community.

Be sure to check out Mayor Bowser's other Kid Zones as well.

Research shows curfews don't work. Anyone who says otherwise is ignoring the data and spinning the illusion of safety for other people who also ignore the data.

DC: tomorrow is the first day of one of my favorite springtime events - the Franciscan Monastery Garden Guild plant sale!

The FMGG grows vegetables year-round, and distributes them to local groups that serve the hungry. The plant sale is their main fundraiser. I’m going to pick up some seedlings

Three short stacks of the same book with blue binding, one rests in front with the cover facing forward, the title is “Read This When Things Fall Apart: Letters to Activists in Crisis” edited by Kelly Hayes. The illustrated cover is a deep blue night sky with constellations, in the foreground a person with long hair and their back to facing us wades in a pond filled with lily pads and surrounded by tall trees and flowers.

Everytime one of my friends dies because of experiencing extreme poverty & homelessness I will become even meaner to the government.

They are all a direct result of being targeted & harmed by people who shouldn’t have had the power to do so.

If ICE agents were prosecuted for every extrajudicial threat, assault, and murder, the courts would be flooded for years.

But let's not let this single arrest warrant rehabilitate a "justice" system that chiefly serves to terrorize, abduct, and imprison people.

The solution is to abolish ICE.

Judge Halts ICE Warehouse Conversion in Maryland, Requires New Environmental Review The order halts work at the Williamsport warehouse and forces a new federal environmental review, raising new questions about when — or even if — the facility can open.

A federal judge again halted ICE’s Maryland warehouse conversion, requiring a full environmental review — a process officials said could take years. Court filings show the agency approved its initial review in a single day, then purchased the property the next.

Smell of feces, vomit fills crowded ICE facility, detainee's wife says Conditions at the ICE facility in central Phoenix mirror the conditions at a Mesa facility, where people were being treated worse than "animals," lawmakers said.

Many, many brave people are fighting to stop this, and also—our collective failure to stop it from getting this far will haunt us for the rest of our lives.
