Also, thanks to so many of you very lovely and generous people I was able to get the parts on my PC replaced and so I'm back in action! Truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for the help with this, it has meant the absolute world to me.

That’s not to say it’s cheap for me - $2000 is most of what I take home in a month, especially since YouTube’s algorithm hasn’t been an ally lately. It’s just not life-or-death - rather, it’s “I’d like it if the next couple months didn’t look like a diet of ramen and water bc of this” lol

End of the day I am very fortunate to be in a position where I can look at a choice between a $600 short-term repair vs a $2000 long-term repair and think “Fuck it, let me take that Affirm micro-loan and get this dealt with”, and I don’t want to misrepresent my situation for donations.

I’m lucky to have a good-paying job now for the first time in my life, and between that and my existing income from being Viveros I can make this work. I really want to emphasize that because I don’t want anyone to feel like I won’t make it without their help and feel guilted into donating.

And also, I want to make it clear that this isn’t like a “If you don’t help me I can’t make content anymore :(“ thing. I really don’t want to guilt trip anyone or make anyone feel obligated because this is something I can ultimately afford myself, even if it’ll suck for a bit.

Normally I don’t talk about money stuff as bluntly, but I do think if I’m gonna ask for help - especially when I’ve talked about some fairly big purchases over the last few months pretty publicly like a new car - I feel like I owe people an explanation for what I’m actually asking for.

So I’m taking this as an opportunity to properly take care of my gear, especially bc I can afford to do so now. When I got this PC, I was using my covid benefits to pay for it. Up until last November I had been making an average of $8K a year, so not really much money leftover for a PC overhaul.

And the reason I tried to replace the case in the first place is because last week the CPU overheated so badly that it shut itself down. I’ve never had that happen before, and even though it didn’t die then, it’s probably a sign that I was pushing it all too hard for too long.

In other words, it’s been running and actively performing tasks nearly constantly for the last 3-ish years. It is honestly shocking it didn’t kill itself years ago. In all that time, all I’ve done is add some extra RAM and upgrade the GPU last year.

Plus, given my slow internet speeds, uploading those VoDs usually takes all day, so typically after I finish a stream I immediately edit/export the VoD and then start the upload overnight, which means my PC has to stay on from about 6:30 PM until I get home from work at 5-6 PM.

In a typical week, I use my PC to do 5-7 gaming livestreams, recording the whole thing in 4K locally while doing so. Then I edit/export those 5-7 3+ hour long 4K videos, as well as recording, editing, and exporting a 30-90 minute video essay in 4K every other week.

I’m going with option 2 because, given what I use my PC for, it’s kind of only a matter of time until I need to do some of this stuff anyways. I put this shit through the wringer more than 99% of people who use a PC, and it’s clearly been struggling for the last few months.

Basically the options were either 1) buy an older replacement CPU and keep all my existing hardware, or 2) upgrade my CPU to a newer one, which will also require upgrading my motherboard, RAM, and PSU, since both CPU and RAM slots have changed and the new stuff needs more power.

This happened after I replaced my PC case and added some more fans yesterday, which I did because it overheated badly last week to the point that the CPU crashed, and the CPU is now broken either as a result of that or damage while trying to move everything over to the new case.

So, to explain the issue, we’ve figured out that the core problem is the CPU. Not cheap, but not the worst-case.

On top of that it turns out that my motherboard is so old that it’s not compatible with new CPUs, which is making things a little more complicated.
