Head and Master law
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Head and Master" laws were a set of American property laws that permitted a husband to have final say regarding all household decisions and jointly owned property without his wife's knowledge or consent. In 1979, Louisiana became the final state to repeal them. Until then, the matter of who paid for property or whose name was on the deed had been irrelevant.
Supreme Court cases and unconstitutionality
In Louisiana, in 1974, Joan Feenstra's husband was incarcerated for molesting their young daughter. To pay his lawyer, he mortgaged their home, which the law did not require his wife's knowledge or permission to do, despite the fact that the wife herself had fully paid for the house. Feenstra then dropped the charges, legally separated from her husband, and returned to court to challenge the constitutionality of the law. The Supreme Court, in Kirchberg v. Feenstra (1981), invalidated the mortgage, concluding that the statute was, in fact, unconstitutional.[1]
In 2015, during oral arguments in the same-sex marriage case Obergefell v. Hodges U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg used the example of the Supreme Court's striking down of Louisiana's Head and Master rule to illustrate how "traditional" concepts of marriage had been revised over time.[2]
This is pretty grim too. Last one overturned in 1981.

“When we embed “health care” resources in the criminal legal system, creating access only through arrest and prosecution, it is inevitable that system stakeholders will be tempted to leverage this arrangement by pulling more and more people into the system to “help” them.”

This is why we made sure that my cousin's now-grown girls knew that my mother had to get their (financially irresponsible) grandfather to cosign so she could get a checking account in 1973 after my father had left us.

I don't see this said enough: the widespread use of generative AI is not only making our jobs as educators harder logistically, but also emotionally. It is genuinely sad to be suspicious of students when you have spent so much time building a pedagogy based on trust and not being a cop. It sucks.

Just the sheer oddity that the section of the commentariat (and electorate!) most obsessed with American strength also voted for the very obvious Imperial Suicide option, I think basically because Gender convinced them of the dumbest possible theory of what would constitute and project strength.

The Trump Administration Says IUDs and the Pill Are Abortions
9.12.25
I started covering this last year, and I can't overstate how important this is: the Trump administration officially labeled some of the most commonly-used forms of birth control as 'abortion' jessica.substack.com/i/173447780/...

One strain of feminist history over the past decade has posited that feminism, as a movement, is corrupt at its foundation because of the influence of Stanton and her ilk. But I think her story shows something more complicated: the mix of bigotry and genuine righteousness that can exist in one mind.

Georgia Cops Ignore Precedent to Arrest Black Woman for Murder After Alleged Abortion
The case is strikingly similar to a 2015 arrest where prosecutors later dropped the charges. “The law hasn't changed. It is still not a crime to take misoprostol,” a reproductive justice lawyer told A...
NEW: Georgia cops arrested a woman for murder after a hospital said she had an abortion with misoprostol.
But in a disturbingly similar 2015 case, a prosecutor said state law prohibits criminal charges—and @ifwhenhow.bsky.social tells @autonomynews.co the law hasn't changed. Both women are Black.

6/ Pregnancy is the only condition where Florida courts have ruled that a mentally competent patient can be forced to undergo unwanted treatment.
It’s rooted in the concept of fetal personhood: that a fetus has equal and, in some cases, more rights than the woman sustaining it.

It is the anniversary of the My Lai massacre today. I'd say that even more than most years, it's important to remember what happened.
And the role Hugh Thompson, an active serviceman, played in both stopping and publicising it. Despite enormous military, political and public pressure to stay quiet.

You’re right. Not calling for resignation seemed to be the more common view (though I cannot say for sure). But there are many (many!) who want resignation.

Florida’s Board of Governors is made up of “political appointees from the business world, from insurance executives to roofing contractors, who are dictating how professors must teach their courses and even providing state-created textbooks for doing so.”

I have said this before, but eliminating programs that teach a lot of students but don’t have many majors is like a restaurant not buying flour in its grocery delivery because people aren’t ordering flour on the menu.

These are “low enrollment” majors but the classes are regularly at capacity. They changed the funding structure a few years ago here, switching the allocation from course enrollments to majors then blamed these departments for a structural, top-down change. This is entirely a political choice.

Kansas Sends Letters To Trans People Demanding The Immediate Surrender Of Drivers Licenses
"The legislature did not include a grace period."
It seems all Kansas-issued trans drivers' licenses are invalid, effective tomorrow
It is now illegal for trans people to drive a car until they surrender their license at a DMV (that most will need to drive to) and have it reissued with the wrong gender marker
This was never about woman's sports

The Trump administration is warehousing pregnant child rape victims in a Texas facility, away from adequate medical care, in a state with one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the US, so that these child rape victims won’t be able to get abortions.

If you are wondering what words the all-male Congress found so "blasphemous" that they felt compelled to literally scrape them off the monument, they were: ''Woman, first denied a soul, then called mindless, now arisen, declared herself an entity to be reckoned.''
